The Audio Engineer is a member of our Production Team. The role requires extensive knowledge of installing audio systems in temporary venues, both indoor and outdoor. The ideal candidate has previous experience with national-level artists, theatre, and corporate events. The majority of this work will take place in Pittsburgh, PA with occasional travel as needed to show sites in the region. Pay rate commensurate with experience, ranging from $21.64 to $24 per hour (with opportunity for overtime).
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and configure audio systems, including PA systems, wireless microphones, intercoms, and digital mixing consoles.
- Prepare equipment as needed in the shop, and conduct quality control checks upon return.
- Direct the implementation of equipment during transportation, load in, show, and load out.
- Operate FOH or monitor mixing consoles during live events, ensuring optimal sound quality.
- Collaborate with producers, directors, and other technical teams to align audio requirements with event goals.
- Diagnose and resolve audio issues quickly and efficiently during setup and live events.
- Support other technicians with troubleshooting advice and support.
- Manage and mentor technicians and other crew members to ensure smooth operation and setup.
- Ensure all equipment and practices meet industry safety and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to the maintenance, repair, and inventory of audio equipment.
- Demonstrate excellent adaptability and client service skills (verbal and written) to communicate effectively with clients and peers.
- Act as a Site-Lead if necessary.
- Assist other company departments as work demands require.
Candidate Qualifications & Competencies
- Relevant certifications and/or a degree in Audio Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- Proven expertise as an advanced A1 in live event production, with a strong track record in various events (corporate A/V, theatre, and concert audio productions).
- Proficiency with digital and analog consoles, RF management, and audio signal flow. Desired systems include Dante Level 2 certification, Waves SoundGrid, Line Array System Deployment Software, Shure Wireless Workbench, AVID, Digico, and Yamaha digital mixing consoles.
- Perform on-site audio rigging and identify compromised rigging hardware.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems and low‑voltage wiring.
- Remain calm under pressure and resolve technical issues in real time.
- Lead and direct technicians and stagehands (including Union/House crew) of varying abilities and experience across multiple disciplines.
- Strong communication skills for coordinating with diverse teams.
- Operate as an A2 or A3 as needed per event.
- Work independently as well as on a team.
- FLEX Inventory software knowledge is a plus.
- Professional understanding of the artistic process and the ability to work closely with clients, including artists, performers, and designers, in a diplomatic way.
- Operate a company‑owned vehicle including box trucks, pick‑up trucks, or cargo vans with a valid driver’s license and the ability to maintain DOT medical clearance.
- Must be over 18 and legally permitted to work for this employer in the U.S.
- Valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Must sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- May operate in a warehouse setting and be required to use a computer for inventory and event prep work.
- May frequently be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Must be comfortable with ladders and heights.
- Must be able to read, see, hear, and speak English.
- Must be able to independently travel to off‑site locations, potentially on short notice.
- Must be willing to work in outdoor venues that may experience inclement weather and varying temperatures.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
