Job summary

Sotheby’s International, New York, NY, seeks an Associate Cataloguer, Books and Manuscripts to support the Books and Manuscripts Department by coordinating and cataloguing live and online sales, producing print and digital catalogues, and assisting with appraisals.

Ideal candidates have at least two years in an auction house or dealer setting, strong provenance research skills, and proficiency with Microsoft Office; overtime/weekend availability may be required.

Qualifications

• Two years or more of experience in an auction house or dealer setting.
• Strong research skills for provenance, publication history, and cataloguing notes.

Responsibilities

• Assist with evaluation of works for auction and appraisal requests.
• Work with specialists on valuations and follow-up on consignments not yet sold.
• Assist specialists in securing consignments and prepare proposals.
• Maintain running lists of property already consigned and client/files records.
• Research provenance, history of consignments, and exhibition history for catalogues.
• Write and proofread catalogue notes and essays with high quality standards.
• Assist with catalogue production, enter/edit catalogue text in ADM, and liaise with Central Receiving and Photo departments.
• Coordinate sale-related tasks including condition reports and exhibition setup.
• Promote auctions and respond to bidder inquiries; handle photographs of lots.
• Coordinate and manage sellers and their property through pre- and post-sale processes.
• Collaborate with other departments to resolve client inquiries and complete transactions.
