Qualifications

  • Admission to the New York State Bar, or pending admission.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and public interest law.
  • Experience representing or working with tenants, low-income individuals, or low-income families.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
  • Familiarity with New York City and New York State housing laws and tenant-related issues.
  • Strong legal research, writing, advocacy, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Represent low-income tenants in housing litigation, including: nonpayment proceedings, holdover cases, housing repairs and conditions matters, and appeals.
  • Advocate for clients before administrative agencies regarding rent overcharges, housing harassment, public assistance, rent arrears grants, and Section 8 benefits.
  • Manage cases from initial intake through negotiation, motion practice, trial, and resolution.
  • Advise tenants, tenant associations, and community organizations regarding legal rights and strategies.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare memoranda, motions, and other legal documents; conduct know-your-rights presentations and housing clinics.
  • Assist in identifying and developing potential impact litigation; work with tenant organizers on outreach and legal strategies.
  • Represent tenant associations before courts and administrative agencies; participate in affordable housing initiatives.

About The Opportunity

Our client is seeking a Bilingual Staff Attorney to join its housing law team and provide legal services to low-income individuals, families, and tenant groups. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney passionate about tenant advocacy, affordable housing, and social justice to handle matters from initial intake through negotiation and litigation.

The attorney will represent tenants in housing-related matters while also working closely with community organizations and tenant groups to provide education, advocacy, and support. The position is fully on-site and requires regular travel to court, particularly Manhattan Housing Court.

Qualifications

  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
  • Ability to manage a full caseload independently and work effectively in a collaborative environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Outlook, Word, and Excel.
Work Environment

This is a fully on-site position based in New York City. The attorney will work in both office and court settings and should be comfortable with frequent travel to court, particularly Manhattan Housing Court.
