Job summary

Springfield Public Schools is seeking an Athletic Trainer to join the Athletics Department in Springfield, Massachusetts. Job Description

DEPARTMENT: Athletics

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director

FUNDING: General

SALARY: TBA

WORK SCHEDULE:

Beginning-1 st day of football equipment fitting (approximately 3 rd week of August

Ends- 1 week after final spring contest. Time used for final inventory and record keeping.

DUTIES:

  • 1. Prevention of athletic injuries through the following procedures: orthopedic screening, individual exercise programs for athletes with pre-exiting conditions, participate in equipment fitting for football and ice hockey, and assist coaches in developing year round conditioning programs.
  • 2. Recognize and evaluate athletic injuries.
  • 3. Provide medical coverage for home contests and daily practices, coordinate emergency medical procedures for all teams at all locations, coordinate emergency medical services as needed, follow the prescribed treatment of the team physician/or licensed physician.
  • 4. Provide for the management, treatment and disposition of athletic injuries through providing injury evaluations before and after practices and referring athletes to the appropriate health care professional.
  • 5. Provide rehabilitation of athletic injuries when appropriate, such as rehabilitation for mild to moderate injuries as prescribed by the team/or licensed physician and provide strength and range of motions and functional testing for injured athletes to insure readiness to return to their sport.
  • 6. Maintain data and complete necessary reports as is required including: all physical forms, injury and progress reports, necessary insurance forms for athletes with medical referrals; daily injury report list with appropriate recommendations, and supply and equipment inventories.
  • 7. Organize pre-season physicals for all prospective candidates.
  • 8. Keep parents, coaches and the athletic director informed of the athlete’s progress in rehabilitation.
  • 9. Provide for appropriate education for athletes, coaching staff, parents and others as may be required.
  • 10. Other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
