Job Description
Position: Athletic Trainer
Supervisor: Director of Schools, Principal and/or Director of Athletics
General Job Description: To assume the responsibility and obligation of establishing and maintaining an effective athletic training program for all interscholastic athletics.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
- Oversee the entire sports medicine program for all student athletes.
- Establish specific hours on a daily basis when any student athlete in need of the trainer's
services would be able to receive proper treatment (may include vacation or holiday periods) and should be coordinated with the student athlete and coach.
- Develop, supervise, evaluate, and modify prevention, emergency care, first aid, evaluation, and the rehabilitation of injuries to student athletes under his/her care.
- Develop, supervise, evaluate, and modify individual exercise programs for rehabilitation to help student athletes return to a pre-injury status.
- Serves as a liaison between the team physician(s)/medical personnel, the student athlete, the student athlete's parents, and the coaching staff on participation restrictions, surgery, rehabilitation, etc.
- Maintain communication with parents on the care and treatment of their student athlete.
- Serve as a resource for the coaching staff on protective equipment.
- Assist with prevention of injuries including education of student athletes, identifying
factors that put athletes "at risk", correcting deficiencies in athletes as deemed necessary, applying specific and appropriate taping, protective devices, and braces to the athletes.
- Evaluate acute and chronic injuries and refer to a physician or specialists where appropriate.
- Treat athletic injuries with protection, rest, ice, compression, evaluation, support, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, cold/heat/and hydrotherapy as needed or prescribed with the availability of modalities.
- Make decisions based on established National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) guidelines.
- Maintain a record of all injuries and a daily treatment log. File necessary reports associated with athletic injuries and/or incidents including injury reports, home care instructions, referrals, treatment records, rehabilitation progress notes, TSSAA incident reports, and insurance claims (this is not an all-inclusive list).
- Secure training room equipment and supplies as needed.
- Attend and monitor Warren County High School team practices allowing access to the athletic training room.
- Attend and monitor Warren County High School sporting events as scheduled with the athletic director.
- Provide access to training room facilities and make available medical attention to student athletes from the middle school and elementary schools within our school district.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
SUMMER MONTHS
- Attend all high school football practices, scrimmages, and on-site summer camps.
- Attend all high school basketball practices, scrimmages, and on-site summer camps.
- Provide assistance to the middle school football, soccer, and volleyball teams as needed.
- Monitor heat index and lightning, notifying head coaches of any practice/game adjustments and
keeping a record.
YEAR ROUND
- Track and maintain all documentation required for a student athlete to become eligible for participation (physicals, EKGs, insurance, etc.), keeping head coaches abreast of student progress.
- Track the required annual training for coaches on concussion and sudden cardiac arrest.
- Develop an Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for all high school sports.
- Conduct an annual workshop for all coaches in the prevention, identification, and treatment of
injuries.
- Attend all high school football and basketball practices/games at home and away.
- Attend all home events for other sports in season, dividing time between events if there is any
overlap. Varsity football will supersede all home events of other sports.
- Serve as a liaison with other trainers on coverage for tournaments and other events.
- Attend post-season and home-hosted contests as directed by the athletic director.
- Provide information and assistance to school nurses, educators, and administrators on concussions and
other injuries that may have an adverse impact on learning and could trigger the need for a 504 plan
and classroom accommodations.
- Assist the coaching staff to ensure there are no safety issues with student athlete equipment.
- Provide assistance and be available via walkie-talkie or cell phone to all student athletes and
coaches during practice sessions when he/she is not physically present.
- Supervise the cleanliness and upkeep of the training room and all equipment.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Schools, Principal, and/or Athletic
Director.
Physical Demands: Physical demands are those activities required of a worker in a job. This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 40 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 20 pounds. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows: 1. May need to be able to move athletic equipment.

Work Conditions: Normal working environment with minor physical discomfort due to weather conditions affecting outside sports activities.
Terms of Employment:
- Salary and work year to be established by the Board
- Eleven-month position, which includes 20 days during the summer (between the last day of school
and the first official day of school).
- The athletic trainer will work in accordance with a weekly schedule to be determined by the athletic
director. Weekly schedules will vary according to the athletic season.
- The athletic trainer should report to school prior to the school lunch rotation and remain until the last
a student athlete leaves from practice and/or game.
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of classified Personnel. The athletic trainer will be evaluated annually by the athletic director.

- The athletic trainer will maintain current certification and continuing education requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification, maintain current state licensure in accordance with the Tennessee Board of Athletic Trainers Examiners, maintain current certification in CPR/Emergency Cardiac Care, and hold a valid Tennessee driver's license.
- The athletic trainer should stay abreast of current trends and training techniques by regularly attending professional development.
- The athletic trainer will attend all professional development required for all WCBOE employees including but not limited to equity training, suicide training, child abuse reporting, BBP training and others as be determined.
