The outreach athletic trainer is responsible for daily medical coverage in college and/or professional sports settings. The ideal candidate will have experience in injury prevention and human movement correction. Responsibilities include providing emergency care, clinical evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning. Employ assessment tools to evaluate program effectiveness, determine return-to-play readiness, and manage head injuries and concussions, referring to medical professionals as needed. All duties are performed under the supervision of a physician and in collaboration with the Sports Medicine Team to ensure excellent service for all outreach program customers.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in athletic training from a CAATE-accredited program. Master’s degree preferred. Experience as a BOC Certified Athletic Trainer is preferred; ability to work independently is required.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION:

Current BOC certification, eligibility for North Carolina Athletic Training license within 30 days of hire, and ability to complete AHA Healthcare Provider (BLS) training within 30 days of hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide athletic training services at collegiate and/or professional sports events to support community service goals.
  2. Assist with event coverage within the Sports Medicine Team.
  3. Provide acute medical care during practices and events.
  4. Offer clinical athletic training services at local orthopaedic clinics as needed.
  5. Recognize, evaluate, and provide immediate care for illnesses and injuries, including emergencies, regardless of setting.
  6. Perform injury evaluations and assess patient function, utilizing standardized diagnostic reasoning.
  7. Determine appropriate treatment, rehabilitation, reconditioning, taping, wrapping, and bracing strategies.
  8. Develop and implement treatment goals, incorporating assessment measures to evaluate effectiveness.
  9. Collaborate with physicians, recommend discontinuation of services when appropriate, and provide final patient assessments.
  10. Determine return-to-play standards for injuries.
  11. Maintain detailed treatment logs, injury reports, referral documentation, and inventory records.
  12. Prepare practice and game setups, including supplies and equipment for medical coverage.
  13. Assist with departmental planning, organization, and policy compliance.
  14. Ensure Emergency Action Plans are in place for each venue, coordinated with athletic staff and EMS.
  15. Contribute to educational programs, seminars, and serve as a presenter when needed.
  16. Mentor and educate students and healthcare professionals during outreach events.
  17. Ensure athletic training sites are properly stocked and equipped; recommend new equipment.
  18. Develop and facilitate physician referral networks and track referrals.
  19. Maintain training on concussion management and cervical spine care.
  20. Adhere to dress code and departmental standards.
  21. Perform other clinical duties as required by state regulations and organizational needs.

  • Participation in competency maintenance and ability to work with all age groups and backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of social work resources for uninsured or underinsured athletes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, proficient with communication devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Variable hours based on departmental needs.
  • Work primarily in on-site training rooms and athletic fields.
  • Manage stressful environments with frequent interruptions.
  • Potential exposure to infections and emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Time spent on activities varies; includes standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, dexterity, talking, hearing, seeing, and lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling as needed.
