Job description

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The hourly range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.77 - $34.48 .

Valid National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Certification.

About the Job

UC Merced Recreation and Athletics is charged with providing a dynamic and competitive overall experience for students on the UC Merced campus. The Athletic Trainer supports this mission by providing preventative injury care and by providing practice, game, and event care to intercollegiate student athletes. The Athletic Trainer must have a very clear understanding of the following areas of emphasis: injury care and prevention for athletes, risk management, and customer service. This position reports directly to the Head Athletic Trainer. Uses moderately complex athletic training concepts. Applies campus policies and procedures to resolve a variety of issues. Works on problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Provides moderately complex prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of and compliance with NCAA, conference, and athletic department rules and regulations related to student‑athlete eligibility within the scope of assigned duties.

Key Responsibilities
  • Athletic Training Service: Provides athletic training services for Recreation and Athletic department home contests and practices as scheduled for both ICA and Sport Clubs. Manages student athletic trainers. Maintain open lines of communication with administrators, Sport Club staff and head coaches. Administers first-aid to athletes. Enforces safety procedures. Able to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
  • Record Keeping: Provide detailed record keeping related to treatment provided to student‑athletes during games and/or practices. Reports injuries, completing appropriate documentation, and maintenance of medical charts. Maintains discretion and confidentiality and handle sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatment.
  • Provides moderate to complex rehabilitation of athletic injuries through the use of various therapeutic exercise programs.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in related area from an accredited institution.
  • Master's Degree in Athletic Training. (Preferred)

AND

  • Two years of related experience/training

Critical Knowledge and Skills

  • Has thorough skills associated with providing treatment of athletic injuries.
  • Has skills necessary to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Has effective organizational and interpersonal skills needed to work with a diverse client group.
  • Position must be able to work in a highly collaborative manner with others, including athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff and others in the athletic department.
  • Is able to maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
  • Demonstrates thorough ability to organize and prioritize work assignments and complete assignments within required timelines.
  • Requires knowledge of electronic/medical records systems. (Preferred)
  • For positions associated with Sports Medicine, must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the NAIA/NCAA, as well as other associations and agencies applicable to athletic treatment of athletes, and, at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.
  • Must be computer literate.
