Job summary

Stephen F. Austin State University is seeking a professional athletic trainer to coordinate the treatment of injuries for student-athletes, reporting to the Director of Sports Medicine.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Oversees application of therapeutic modalities and treatments in the training room.
• Aids in prevention of athletic injuries by preventative taping, protective equipment fitting, and maintaining safety at practices and competitions.
• Designs and coordinates rehabilitation program for players after surgery or injuries.
• Administers emergency procedures to injured athletes during practices and games.
• Maintains treatment/injury records for student-athletes and supervises medication distribution under the team physician orders.
• Assigns and supervises graduate and student assistants in the training rooms.
• Coordinates scheduling and conduct of pre-season athletic physicals for all student-athletes.
• Prepares reports on injured student-athletes for head coach and progress reports on rehabilitation.
• Arranges training room supplies/equipment for trips.
• Conducts training sessions and supervises graduate assistants in athletic medicine activities.

Job Description

This is a professional position responsible for coordinating thetreatment of injuries to student-athletes. Regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment when performing work. Reports to the Director of Sports Medicine.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology, health, exercise science, or related field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.

One year of related experience is required. Experience in collegiate athletic training is required. NATA certification, athletic trainer licensure in Texas, and instructor level certification in CPR and first aid is required. Candidates without current Texas license will be considered if license can be obtained prior to start date.

Essential Job Functions

1. Oversees the application of therapeutic modalities andtreatments in the training room.
2. Aids in the prevention of athletic injuries by administeringpreventative taping, purchasing and fitting special protectiveequipment, and maintaining safety conditions at practices andcompetitions.
3. Designs, implements, and coordinates the rehabilitation programfor players after surgery, with off-season injuries, or usingpreventive exercise in response to pre-season screeningresults.
4. Administers emergency procedures to injured athletes inassigned sports during practices and games.
5. Maintains records of treatments and injuries of allstudent-athletes seen and treated in the training rooms. Supervisesthe distribution of approved medications under the orders of theteam physician.
6. Assigns and supervises graduate and student assistants assignedto the training rooms.
7. Coordinates the scheduling and conduct of pre-season athleticphysicals for all student-athletes.
8. Prepares reports on injured student-athletes for the head coachand provides periodic progress reports on the rehabilitation ofinjured players.
9. Makes arrangements for training room supplies and equipment tobe transported on trips.
10. Conducts training sessions and supervises graduate assistantsin the performance of athletic medicine activities.

Non-Essential Job Functions

1. Makes appointments for student-athletes to see privatephysicians, as necessary.
2. Remains on 24-hour call to sports specific players fortreatment and/or counseling, as assigned.
3. Meets with recruits, as assigned, to tour department trainingrooms and discuss injuries and rehabilitation programs.
4. Attends university, conference, NCAA, and other organizationalmeetings, as assigned.
5. Adheres to all applicable NCAA, conference, and universityrules and regulations.
6. Travels with teams to away games, as required.
7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
