Job summary

UPMC Sports Medicine in Pittsburgh seeks a full-time floater athletic trainer to cover vacancies, time off, leaves of absence, and special events across Western and Central Pennsylvania.

You will work with world-renowned experts in modern facilities, serving diverse teams and practices. Requirements include BOC certification, PA licensure, and a BS/BA; travel to local sites is required. Sign-on bonus available.

Qualifications

  • Certified athletic trainer by the BOC.
  • Licensed as an athletic trainer in Pennsylvania.
  • Emergency Cardiac Care (AHA) certification required.
  • Act 114 PDE FBI Clearance.
  • Act 168; Act 33 with renewal; Act 34 with renewal.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel locally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide athletic training services at multiple sites as coverage demands.
  • Maintain stocked kits and follow departmental communication standards.
  • Participate in athletic training services at special events sponsored by UPMC Sports Medicine.
  • Build relationships with UPMC services and staff at contracted sites.
  • Follow policies and document evaluations, care plans, and outcomes.

Job description

UPMC Sports Medicine is one of the nation’s largest employers of athletic trainers with approximately 200 staff members. We have several exciting opportunities working in the outreach setting. More than 90 pro, college, and high school organizations in Western and Central Pennsylvania turn to us for athletic training services. This is a full-time Floater position to cover vacancies, time off requests, leaves of absences, and special events as well as support the Pittsburgh Passion women's professional football team.

As a staff member in our program, you will be part of a team led by world-renowned sports medicine experts that work in state‑of‑the‑art facilities. We have comprehensive physician, imaging, physical therapy, concussion, nutrition, and sports performance services that serve as resources to you.

The floater position offers opportunities beyond basic skills including but not limited to:

External/qualified candidates will receive $15,000 with a 2‑year commitment to UPMC.

UPMC Sports Medicine also offers reimbursement for above normal commute, as well as financial assistance for NATA dues and BOC maintenance fees!

Responsibilities:
  • Adaptable to working in various environments, flexible with schedule assignments/changes, and maintains an adequately stocked kit for coverage
  • Follows established departmental communication standards for athletic training staff
  • Participates in athletic training services at special events sponsored by UPMC Sports Medicine
  • Proactive in building relationships with UPMC services (CRS facilities, neuropsychologists, physicians, etc)
  • Provides athletic training services following the rules and regulations of the National Athletic Trainers? Association Code of Ethics, BOC Standards of Professional Practice, Pennsylvania State Practice Act and Pennsylvania Rules & Regulations for Licensed Athletic Trainers, and UPMC system-wide and Athletic Training & Development department-specific Policies and Procedures.
  • Assists in providing treatment to patients at UPMC Centers for Rehab Services as needed
  • Provides athletic training services within contractual guidelines utilizing UPMC and site‑specific Written Protocol and adhering to Written Physician Agreements
  • Coordinates, conducts a/o assists in pre‑season assessments for contracted athletic organizations
  • Participates in community education programming approved by UPMC Sports Medicine
  • Checks email daily for coverage requests with responses in a timely manner, communicates with staff member who the floater is covering for prior to coverage for logistics, and communicates after coverage to discuss injuries, issues, etc,
  • Provides evaluations, establishes plans of care, and selects appropriate treatment and rehabilitation interventions.
  • Participates in professional growth and development related to the field of sports medicine to further his/her knowledge
  • Maintains, completes and submits appropriate electronic and written incident documentation for the contracted organization per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide feedback to management staff regarding the working conditions, workflow, suggestions for improvements, and positive acknowledgements at our contracted sites
  • Maintains, completes and submits department‑specific electronic and written documentation to supervisory staff at UPMC as per departmental policies and procedures
  • Presents one in‑service education program every two years according to established departmental guidelines
  • Assists in maintaining efficient flow of patients, provides educational services, and selects and fits prescribed soft goods items in the physician offices associated with UPMC Sports Medicine as needed
  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science or Art degree.
  • Ability to quickly establish rapport with students, physicians, staff and co‑workers.
  • Highly organized and able to prioritize assignments.
  • Reliable transportation and willingness to travel to worksites within local area required
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
  • Certified as an athletic trainer by the Board of Certification (BOC).
  • Licensed as an athletic trainer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
  • Emergency Cardiac Care based on AHA standards including both didactic and skills demonstrations. Course must include following areas: adult & pediatric CPR, AED, airway obstruction, 2nd rescuer CPR and barrier devices (e.g., pocket mask, bag valve mask). Proof of course completion must be presented within 30 days of hire.
