ATF (Aero Thermal Fluids) Senior Specialist

Location: Canoga Park, CA OR West Palm Beach, FL OR Remote (may be possible)

Pay Range: $60-70/hr W2

Duration: 12 months

Duties:

The candidate will work in the ATF (Aero Thermal Fluids) group based out of either the Canoga Park or West Palm Beach facility, with potential for full remote work depending on qualifications.

The candidate:

Shall have the capability to utilize a combination of commercial and in-house developed software tools, and/or hand calculation methods to design and analyze bearings and seals related to pump-fed liquid rocket engine systems.

Shall have extensive knowledge of designing and analyzing bearings and seals such as:

  • Bearings: Rolling Elements: Ball, Roller, and Cylindrical bearings; Fluid Film: Hydrostatic, annular, balance piston, and hydrodynamic
  • Seals: Dynamic, clearance, rubbing contact, and lift-off

May need to collaborate with design engineers to provide tribology support, focusing on seals, bearings, and sliding interfaces. This involves selecting material systems that meet design requirements, and assisting in developing wear-resistant materials, finishes, and geometries suitable for launch and in-space environments.

Shall be able to identify and mitigate lubrication and wear risks in high-performance mechanisms, recommend and implement coupon testing to screen materials, and collaborate with suppliers to ensure processes, coatings, and finishes meet requirements.

Percentages of responsibilities:

  • 80% - Perform design and analysis tasks related to bearings and seals, capable of working with minimal oversight, utilizing software tools and hand calculations.
  • 10% - Enhance the technical capacity of the team through mentoring.
  • 10% - Produce and present analysis and test reports to internal and external stakeholders.
Skills:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or equivalent, with at least 7 years of experience.
  • Strong background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
  • Proficiency in ANSYS Workbench and turbomachinery analysis tools.
  • Familiarity with Linux systems.
  • Experience programming in MATLAB, FORTRAN, Python.
  • Position is full-time onsite, with potential for full remote depending on qualifications.
