Job summary

The University of Texas at Austin is seeking a Mechanical Engineer for the McDonald Observatory on the UT Austin campus with occasional travel to the observatory. You will design, analyze, test, and support optomechanical and electromechanical subsystems for instrument and telescope development projects.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related field) with 6+ years of experience or Master's with 4+ years.
  • Experience writing specifications to support mechanical work.
  • Experience designing mechanical parts and assemblies.
  • Proficiency with CAD applications for mechanical design.
  • Experience with FEA to validate performance of mechanical structures.
  • Experience with 3D printing for prototypes and parts.
  • Experience in sourcing and procuring mechanical parts and off-the-shelf hardware.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop scientific instrumentation and mechanical equipment with initiative and independence.
  • Create fabrication drawings and manage part fabrication.
  • Assemble, deploy, and field support developed instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with project leadership on design concepts and requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports and participate in design reviews.
