Job summary

Dean Dorton is seeking an Assurance Supervisor of Construction Services to oversee assurance engagements for construction clients, supervise team members, and ensure timely, quality project delivery. You will coordinate with directors and managers, address technical issues, and maintain communication with clients to ensure satisfaction.

The role emphasizes construction-specific accounting areas such as percent-of-completion, job costing, and WIP schedules, while maintaining regulatory compliance

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in assurance or accounting roles; experience with construction clients preferred.
  • CPA license or ability to obtain CPA in a reasonable time.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, lead, and manage assurance engagements for construction industry clients.
  • Mentor assurance team members and interns, guiding project delivery.
  • Maintain strong project management, deadlines, and budgeting for engagements.
  • Serve as main point of contact for clients, communicating status and needs.
  • Review engagement procedures for accounting basis and regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare and review workpapers, financial statements, and WIP/bonding reports.
  • Collaborate with engagement teams and management to resolve issues.
  • Stay current on changes in assurance and accounting standards affecting construction.
  • Develop familiarity with construction industry associations (CFMA, AGC).
  • Maintain professional communication with clients, bankers, and advisors.

About the Role

The Assurance Supervisor of Construction Servicesis a project manager responsible for working on and overseeing assurance engagements, supervising team members, and ensuring the successful completion of client projects, while maintaining effective communication with both internal team members and external clients. This role will work primarily with clients in the construction industry, including general contractors, subcontractors, developers, and real estate entities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervise, in-charge, and lead assurance engagements for construction industry clients, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
  • Supervise and mentor assurance team members, including associates and interns, providing guidance and support throughout the assurance engagement while fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Maintain excellent project management skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and multitask effectively — particularly around construction industry reporting cycles and surety/bonding deadlines.
  • Serve as a point of contact for construction clients, communicating project status, requesting necessary information, and addressing client questions and concerns, as needed.
  • Conduct and review engagement procedures, ensuring compliance with respective basis of accounting, regulatory requirements, and assurance methodologies, with attention to construction-specific areas such as percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, and work-in-progress (WIP) schedules.
  • Prepare and review workpapers, financial statements, and other engagement documentation — including WIP schedules and bonding‑related reporting — ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Collaborate with engagement teams, directors, and managers to address technical issues, resolve problems, and ensure efficient project management on construction engagements.
  • Stay current on changes in assurance and accounting standards and regulations affecting the construction industry, applying knowledge to improve assurance processes and procedures.
  • Obtain a baseline understanding of the firm's services and begin collaborating with other service groups (tax, advisory, etc.) to provide effective client service and identify opportunities for multi‑service projects with construction clients.
  • Begin developing familiarity with construction industry associations and resources (e.g., CFMA, AGC) as part of building industry expertise.
  • Maintain strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients and team members, including sureties, bankers, and other advisors to construction clients.
  • Maintain compliance of assurance continuing education requirements, regardless of licensure status (e.g., Yellow Book, EBP).

Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in an assurance or accounting related role; experience with construction industry clients preferred.
  • CPA license or the ability to obtain your CPA in a reasonable time.
