Job summary

ACHD is seeking an Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer / Traffic Operations Engineer in Boise to plan, implement, and optimize traffic flow and safety improvements, including signal timing and coordination under the Congestion Management Supervisor. The role requires a Civil or Traffic Engineering degree and licensure or near-term licensure (EIT or PE) with Idaho eligibility.

Primary duties include adjusting signal timing for construction, events, and detours; responding to signal operations

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Traffic Engineering or related field is required.
  • EIT within one year is required for Assistant Traffic Ops Engineer.
  • For Traffic Ops Engineer, PE license in Idaho or the ability to obtain PE within one year.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize and implement traffic flow and safety improvements, including signal timing and coordination.
  • Adjust signal timing for construction, special events and incidents causing detours and lane closures.
  • Investigate and resolve traffic signal operations-related problems and communicate with citizens about signal operation.
  • Assist in operating the Traffic Management Center and support occasional weekend/evening events.

Primary Duties
  • Under the supervision of the Congestion Management Supervisor, the Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer / Traffic Operations Engineer plans, organizes and implements traffic flow and safety improvements, including signal timing and coordination; makes adjustments to signal timing for construction, special events and incidents that result in detours and/or lane closures.
  • Investigates and resolves traffic signal operations-related problems and complaints; communicates with individual citizens via phone and in writing regarding the operation of traffic signals.
  • This position will require assisting in the operation of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and supporting the occasional special event on weekends or evenings
Qualifications
  • Assistant Traffic Ops Engineer: A Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Traffic Engineering or related Engineering field is required. Possession of an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) within one year is also required. OR any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience may be acceptable.
  • Traffic Ops Engineer: A Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering field is required. Must be a registered Professional Engineer (PE) in Idaho or able to obtain PE within one year. Or, an extensive combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, abilities and experience may be acceptable.
