Qualifications

Position Summary

The Assistant Maintenance Manager contributes to the overall success of Coast Hotels by ensuring the hotel’s physical assets are maintained to the highest standards while supporting a safe, comfortable, and exceptional guest experience. This role provides hands‑on technical expertise, supervises and supports maintenance team members, coordinates departmental workflow, and assists in the day‑to‑day leadership of the Engineering & Maintenance Department.

The Assistant Maintenance Manager is a working leader who leads by example, promotes accountability, and demonstrates Coast Hotels’ commitment to service excellence, safety, and operational efficiency.

What You’ll Do
Leadership & Team Development
  • Assist with the daily supervision, direction, and coordination of maintenance team members.
  • Communicate clear departmental objectives, priorities, and quality standards.
  • Delegate work assignments and monitor productivity and completion of tasks.
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and performance feedback to support team development.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and engaging work environment that encourages teamwork and accountability.
Maintenance & Operations
  • Perform and oversee general repair and maintenance of hotel facilities, equipment, and systems.
  • Coordinate preventive maintenance programs to reduce downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Troubleshoot building systems and equipment issues and ensure timely corrective action.
  • Assist with capital improvement projects, renovations, and special maintenance initiatives.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and maintenance areas are maintained in a safe and organized condition.
  • Demonstrate a guest-first mindset by anticipating needs and resolving maintenance‑related concerns promptly.
  • Support operational departments by responding quickly and effectively to maintenance requests.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the guest experience through facility enhancements and preventative maintenance efforts.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all company policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and promote safe work practices throughout the department.
  • Support compliance with OSHA, WHMIS (where applicable), fire safety, environmental, and workplace safety requirements.
  • Participate in safety inspections, training, and incident prevention initiatives.
Other Duties
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum one (1) trade certification or qualification in Refrigeration, HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing.
  • Minimum one (1) year of Journeyman-level experience in one or more skilled trades.
  • Prior supervisory or lead-hand experience in hotel, commercial, or facilities maintenance preferred.
Technical Knowledge
  • Strong knowledge of building systems, preventive maintenance practices, and repair procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tools, equipment, and materials used in maintenance and repair work.
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations, safe work practices, and hazard prevention.
  • Strong leadership and team development skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and respond effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional demeanor and commitment to service excellence.
  • Physical ability to perform maintenance duties, including lifting, climbing, bending, and extended periods of standing or walking.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Must-Have Requirements
  • Refrigeration experience is required.
  • Current Refrigeration certification/license applicable to the jurisdiction.
  • EPA Section 608 Certification (Universal preferred).
  • Valid trade certification in Refrigeration, HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing.
  • Journeyman-level experience in a skilled trade discipline.
