Job summary

Jobtailor is seeking an Electrical Substation Designer to support CONT and Western MA projects. You will create detailed engineering designs using CAD tools, develop design packages with cross-functional teams, and participate in field investigations to ensure design accuracy.

The role emphasizes collaboration, adherence to industry codes, and timely documentation. Travel to MA, CT, and NH regions may be required, with emergency restoration duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of electrical systems, including wiring, one-line, three-line, and schematic diagrams.
  • Knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Ability to apply department design/drafting standards and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directions effectively, both written and orally.
  • Ability to apply basic electrical theory, technical mathematics, and basic science.
  • Associate of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 0–2 years of directly related utility design, wiring, or technical experience preferred.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Availability for emergency restoration assignments and storm duty.
  • Willingness to travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Design and support substation projects in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.
  • Develop detailed engineering designs using computer-aided techniques.
  • Develop final detailed design packages with engineering, construction, design, and vendor personnel.
  • Prepare conceptual designs and sketches based on field investigations, project scope, and engineering criteria.
  • Perform field visits to verify site conditions, resolve field issues, and verify design accuracy.
  • Guide, train, and direct design drafters in developing finished drawings.
  • Perform technical calculations for substation designs.
  • Prepare, approve, and maintain bills of materials and supporting design documents.
  • Process, review, and approve design changes for field-related problems.
  • Verify as-built conditions of design documents.
  • Assist with department standards development in accordance with utility industry practices.
  • Review and approve vendor projects.
  • Provide design input to engineers for project development.
  • Support additional equipment, materials, or services for construction.
  • Provide design services to Engineering for federal, state, and local license submittals.
  • Perform storm duty and emergency restoration assignments as required.

Requirements

  • Zero (0) to two (2) years of directly related utility design, wiring, or technical experience preferred
  • Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
  • Availability for emergency restoration assignments and storm duty
  • Availability to travel between Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire as necessary
