Position Description

East Bay Community Action Program (EBCAP) seeks two full-time/full-year Associate Teachers to join our team and provide a nurturing and safe classroom environment for children in our Head Start program at 8 John H. Chafee Boulevard in Newport, RI. Due to the critical nature of this position to provide services to children, EBCAP is offering a two-step sign-on bonus totaling $1000 for external applicants.

The Head Start Associate Teachers assist the Lead Teachers in carrying out developmentally appropriate activities for children. The Associate Teacher’s role is to promote the children’s health, nutrition, and education, attend to their safety and welfare, observe and record children’s behaviors, and identify each child’s strengths and areas to grow. The Associate Teachers will follow the requirements of the Head Start Performance Standards, RI Child Care Center Regulations for Licensing, and RI Department of Education Early Learning Standards. Our Head Start program utilizes the Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) approach and the Creative Curriculum to ensure that all children have a high-quality, nurturing, and safe learning experience.

Qualifications

The successful candidates must have excellent communication skills to effectively communicate with parents, children, staff, community representatives, and volunteers and have one of the following:

  1. A minimum of a high school diploma or GED certificate with a minimum of 6 credit hours in Early Childhood Education (ECE) coursework and a supervised teaching experience in an ECE setting and must be enrolled in a Child Development Associate (CDA) program to be completed within one year of hire OR;
  2. Child Development Associate (CDA) credential in Early Childhood and a supervised teacher experience in ECE setting OR;
  3. Bachelor or Associate in Early Childhood Education or a related field and a supervised teaching experience in an ECE setting.

*The Rhode Island quality rating and improvement system, Bright Stars defines related degrees for early childhood education teachers as Human Development, Psychology, Sociology, Social Work, and Education. Pediatric Nursing, Home Economics/Family & Consumer Science, Physical Education & Recreation, and Child & Family Studies. Head Start teacher assistant/float candidates who hold a related degree will be required to provide detailed college transcripts to validate appropriate ECE-related courses.
