Job summary

Ross Stores, Inc. seeks an experienced Associate Systems Administrator to support hardware platforms, operating systems, and related technologies across Ross’s distribution and transportation systems.

Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of experience supporting retail systems, with at least 1 year in a complex heterogeneous environment supporting supply‑chain distribution systems.
  • Solid understanding of retail dynamics, supply‑chain technology, and warehouse control systems in a highly integrated environment.
  • Experience with Distribution Center / Warehouse Management Systems.
  • Strong technical expertise in networking topologies, wireless infrastructure, and maintaining network systems and services.
  • Proficiency in UNIX and Windows operating systems, Internet/Intranet technologies.
  • Experience with data‑center design, optimization, and environmental support components.

Responsibilities

  • Design, install, maintain, configure, secure, and support hardware platforms, operating systems, and related technologies.
  • Develop and deliver timely solutions that enable IT to move forward quickly with high quality workmanship.
  • Plan and execute performance baselines, monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning.
  • Provide documentation and knowledge transfer to supported individuals or organizations.
  • Perform hardware/software configuration and release management.
  • Use productivity tools to proactively manage workload and priorities.
  • Apply SDLC processes to develop, present, and track project activity.
  • Demonstrate understanding of structured cabling systems (CAT5/6/6E, fiber, IDF/MDF).
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware/software issues on WCS platforms (Dematic, Tilt Tray, GOH, etc.).
  • Resolve issues on deployed components such as RF devices, ticketing, label platforms, time‑keeping, backup environments, and voice systems.

About the Role

As an experienced Associate Systems Administrator, you will administer, monitor, and support hardware platforms, operating systems, and related technologies across Ross’s distribution and transportation systems. Your work will help improve distribution center operations, ensuring high standards of system uptime and availability through documentation, best practices, and process development.

Essential Functions
  • Design, install, maintain, configure, secure, and support hardware platforms, operating systems, wired/wireless network components, and related technologies.
  • Develop and deliver timely solutions that enable the IT organization to move forward quickly while maintaining high quality workmanship during all phases of delivery.
  • Plan and execute performance baselines, monitoring, tuning, and capacity planning, diagnosing and resolving performance issues.
  • Take on new roles and responsibilities as assigned or as business needs require.
  • Provide appropriate documentation and knowledge transfer to supported individuals or organizations.
  • Perform hardware/software configuration and release management.
  • Use productivity tools to proactively manage workload—including time, project, and priority management.
  • Apply SDLC processes to develop, present, and track project activity, including presentations to technical and managerial associates.
  • Demonstrate detailed understanding of structured cabling systems (CAT5, Cat 6/6E, fiber optics, IDF/MDFs, switches, and cross‑connection methodologies).
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware/software issues on WCS platforms (Dematic conveyance, Integrated/Crisplant Tilt Tray, GOH, PTL/PTV, Ticketing).
  • Resolve issues on deployed components such as RF devices, ticketing systems, label platforms, time‑keeping, backup environments, and voice systems.

Qualifications & Special Skills Required
  • 2‑4 years of experience supporting retail systems, with at least 1 year in a complex heterogeneous environment supporting supply‑chain distribution systems.
  • Solid understanding of retail dynamics, supply‑chain technology, and warehouse control systems in a highly integrated environment.
  • Experience with Distribution Center / Warehouse Management Systems.
  • Strong technical expertise in networking topologies, wireless infrastructure, and maintaining network systems and services (servers, routers, switches, firewall, VPN, VoIP, and other IP devices).
  • Proficiency in UNIX and Windows operating systems, Internet/Intranet technologies.
  • Experience with data‑center design, optimization, and environmental support components.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 2+ years with backup technologies, high‑end storage solutions (Hitachi SAN preferred), SCCM System Management, and event‑management tools.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, securing, monitoring, tuning, and ensuring integrity of operating systems.
  • Hands‑on experience with system management processes: patch management, change, configuration, release, problem management, business continuity planning, customer service, and vendor relationship management.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, root‑cause analysis, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Physical Requirements / ADA

Work is primarily in an office environment, with frequent computer use. Requires sitting, standing, walking, typing, and occasional lifting of boxes up to 50 pounds. Must be able to walk throughout large distribution centers, ascend/descend stairs, and communicate in noisy environments. Full‑time, on‑site presence is required for team interaction, meetings, client support, mentoring, and coaching.
