Accountabilities:

As an Associate Specialist, you'll play a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Waltham vivarium. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing routine facility operations tasks and daily animal husbandry tasks for the rodent colony.
  • Identifying and reporting any abnormal findings while maintaining high standards of animal care and welfare.
  • Documenting daily tasks and communicating progress to the manager.
  • Processing dirty cages for sanitation and preparing clean cages for new animals.
  • Operating cage washing equipment and other cleaning and sanitizing tools.
  • Using sanitization and sterilization equipment.
  • Maintaining cleanliness and sanitation of animal rooms, halls, and support spaces.
  • Assisting in daily general recordkeeping and specialized monitoring or surveillance of rooms.
  • Preparing special diets or medications according to protocols and delivering them to therapy areas.
  • Receiving animals from suppliers and identifying them as instructed.
  • Actively participating in annual goal setting and self-evaluation processes with the manager.
  • Staying informed about advances in laboratory animal science through continued professional development.
  • Ensuring work is performed in accordance with Safety, Health and Environment standards, including Good Laboratory Standards.
  • Working flexibly across different areas and providing weekend and out-of-hours support.
Essential Skills/Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience with 0-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience working with animals in a laboratory setting is a plus.
  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness to work with infectious agents, hazardous materials, and radioactive materials.
  • Ability to work flexibly across different areas and participate in provision of weekend and out-of-hours support.
Desirable Skills/Experience:
  • Some experience troubleshooting equipment in animal vivariums or similar settings.
  • Basic experience in using technology to improve efficiencies.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance, inventory control, and sanitation procedures.
