Job summary

Pearson is seeking remote scorers for multiple subject areas to evaluate responses from Massachusetts teacher candidates and to internalize scoring standards. You will participate in consensus scoring with other scorers and discuss bias to improve objectivity.

Qualified candidates may include current teachers or retired practitioners with relevant experience. Training is provided; the role is remote with flexible scheduling.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher; teaching certification in the subject area; and two or more years of recent public school service in the subject area.
  • Alternatively, college/university faculty experience preparing candidates for the subject, or holding a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree while teaching courses.
  • Both active and recently retired practitioners may be eligible to score.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate responses to test questions by Massachusetts teacher candidates.
  • Internalize scoring standards, participate in discussions, and engage with other scorers in consensus scoring activities.
  • Recognize and discuss bias types (implicit, cultural, leniency, central tendency, halo) and apply strategies to reduce personal biases in scoring.
  • Meet quality and productivity requirements and pass a qualifying test before scoring.
  • Work remotely as part of the scoring program.

Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher, and
  • A current teaching certification in the subject area you are applying for AND be practicing or have two (2) or more years’ recent experience in the service role in a public school in the subject area you are applying for

OR serve as, or have recently served as, a college/university/program faculty member who prepares candidates for the subject you are applying for

OR who holds a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree and is a graduate student currently teaching courses in the subject area

Both active and recently retired practitioners can be eligible to score.

Overall Responsibilities
  • Evaluate responses to test questions by Massachusetts teacher candidates
  • Internalize scoring standards, participate in discussions, and engage with other scorers in consensus scoring activities
  • Recognize and discuss various types of bias (e.g., implicit bias, cultural bias, leniency bias, central tendency bias, halo effect) and effect strategies to reduce personal biases in scoring
  • Meet quality and productivity requirements established for the scoring program, including passing a qualifying test before scoring
  • Rate of $17.50 per hour
  • Working remotely
Working Conditions

Scoring sessions take place during the week Monday through Friday. Scoring sessions will occur on one or two days every 4 to 8 weeks depending on the subject. The scoring day runs from 8:30 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m., including training. Three to sixteen hours of work are available on the one to two days every 4-8 weeks.

Training takes place before scoring begins. There may be a brief orientation meeting before the day of scoring occurs.
