Job summary

Bristol Myers Squibb in New Brunswick, NJ is seeking an Associate Scientist, Analytical Development to help develop analytical methods for drug substances within CPD, collaborating with chemists, engineers, and analytical scientists.

You will work on in-process and release methods for small molecules and ADCs, using HPLC/UHPLC/SEC/GC/IC and other techniques while ensuring safety and quality. This role supports scale-up and process optimization in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or equivalent with 1–5 years pharma analytical experience (or 0–2 years with MS).
  • Experience with chromatography and/or spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with modern lab equipment, automation, and digital tools.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and quality.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

Our Chemical Process Development (CPD) team is committed to CMC design, development, and commercialization of innovative drug substances to improve patient lives. Position Summary

This Analytical Development role will be responsible for developing effective collaborations within CPD project teams consisting of organic chemists, chemical engineers, and analytical scientists to support an increasingly complex portfolio of small molecules and milla-molecular (ADCs, peptides, oligonucleotides) drug candidates.

  • Accountable for providing fit-for-purpose analytical methods and analyses which provide key insights and process knowledge for scale-up and process optimization studies for projects within the portfolio.
  • Facilitate analytical problem solving by utilizing various analytical techniques in the development of drug substance programs.
  • Accountable for collaborating within project teams to provide innovative analytical approaches to help solve challenging problems encountered to support route selection and process optimization studies conducted by chemists and chemical engineers.
  • Partners with other Analytical Functions within CPD, and across Product Development to evolve, integrate and optimize analytical support to create a world-class analytical function.
Key Responsibilities

The Associate Scientist will collaborate as an individual contributor within an analytical project matrix team for multiple development candidates across BMS sites to develop analytical methodology to support drug substance process development. This includes:

  • Development of in-process and release analytical methods throughout the synthetic chemistry of drug substances including chromatography-based methods such as HPLC/UHPLC/SEC/GC/IC, as well as other pharmaceutically relevant techniques (e.g., KF, LOD, titration, etc.), under the supervision of a senior scientist.
  • Critical analysis of analytical results with the goal of improving the robustness of analytical methods and enhancing understanding of key quality attributes.
  • Responsible for actively collaborating with other key scientists within the team.
  • Expected to consistently display a can-do attitude and demonstrate the willingness and capability to adapt and grow within a complex and changing environment.
  • Review and discuss analytical results and conclusions both orally and in writing.
Required
Qualifications & Experience
  • BS or MS in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or equivalent, with 1–5 years of demonstrated pharmaceutical industry experience in relevant analytical techniques (or 0–2 years with an MS).
  • Experience with various analytical techniques, including chromatography and/or spectroscopy preferred.
  • Familiarity with modern laboratory equipment, automation, and digital tools
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety.
  • Ability to execute and document scientific experiments and effectively communicate study results.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and strong desire to grow scientifically.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, team building, and communication skills to ensure effective collaborations within matrix teams. Demonstrated performance against cooperation principles and enterprise mindset.
Compensation Overview

New Brunswick - NJ - US: $75,500 - $91,485

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

  • Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.
