Job summary

SLR Consulting seeks an Associate Scientist/Air Quality Engineer in Houston, TX to join the Air Quality Permitting and Compliance Team. The role requires a strong background in air quality regulations and proven consulting experience across industries such as oil & gas and mining.

You will support permitting, compliance reporting, and regulatory reporting while collaborating with a national technical team. Your responsibilities include developing permit applications, producing technical reports,

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive experience in air quality consulting.
  • Strong understanding of Title V, PSD, GHG and Emissions Inventory Reporting, NSPS, and NESHAP.
  • Experience helping clients maintain compliance with air quality programs.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced consulting environment, managing multiple projects, meeting deadlines, and delivering high-quality work.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
  • Demonstrated experience solving environmental challenges, calculating air emissions, and interpreting complex regulations.
  • Strong technical writing skills, with a track record of producing comprehensive technical reports.
  • Experience engaging with State and Federal regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to travel by air and car, including occasional overnight trips.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to SLR and client-specific health, safety, and environmental policies including compliance with drug and alcohol requirements.
  • Support air quality permitting, compliance reporting, and field data collection activities under the guidance of a Principal or Senior Project Manager.
  • Collaborate with project team members to develop, review, and deliver permit applications and technical reports.
  • Mentor junior staff and foster skill development within the team.
  • Learn and apply compliance reporting software tools effectively.
  • Provide technical expertise on regulatory frameworks, engineering approaches and investigative methods relevant to project work.
  • Assist clients in implementing and managing air quality compliance programs.
  • Prepare proposals and present technical solutions to a diverse client base.
  • Build and maintain client relationships through consistent delivery of high-quality technical work.
  • Participate in short-duration travel for client meetings and project-related activities.
