Position Purpose

The Associate Respiratory Therapist Level 1 provides direct patient care and treatment as prescribed by physicians, collaborating as part of an interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• Respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies and rapid response requests; provide respiratory care as needed.
• Administer and monitor medical gases, including heliox mixtures.
• Administer aerosolized medications, evaluate patient response, and document results.
• Initiate and adjust invasive and non-invasive ventilation, monitoring parameters and alarms.
• Obtain written orders for therapies and procedures.
• Perform arterial blood gas analysis and bedside spirometry.
• Conduct airway clearance therapies and participate in patient transport.
• Maintain artificial airways and document all procedures accurately.
• Operate and maintain respiratory care equipment, troubleshoot issues.
• Communicate patient care plans and handoff reports effectively.
• Educate patients and families about therapies.
• Report any unusual or high-risk situations to supervisory staff.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Associate Degree program in Respiratory Therapy.
• Valid license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in New York State, or a valid limited permit.

Notes

Practitioners in New York since 1994 must provide evidence of application for licensure under grandparenting provisions to continue practice until December 31, 1994, or until notified otherwise.

Maintaining licensure is required to retain the position.
