The Indiana University School of Medicine Bloomington Emergency Medicine Residency is seeking a dynamic and dedicated Associate Program Director (APD) to join our collaborative leadership team. This position offers a unique opportunity to shape a new residency program, which will matriculate its first intern class in July 2026. The program is only the second emergency medicine residency in Indiana, sponsored by the Indiana University School of Medicine and based at the IU Health Bloomington Regional Academic Health Center.
The APD will serve as a key leader in resident education, faculty development, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives, supporting the mission and vision of the residency, Department, School, and health system. This is a dually-employed, full clinical (non-tenure track) faculty position within the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Emergency Medicine and the IU Health Medical Group South (IUHMG-S). It includes a 40% FTE administrative role and a 60% clinical commitment, primarily in the South Region Emergency Departments, including IU Health Bloomington, IU Health Bedford, IU Health Paoli, and IU Health Morgan.
The IUSM is the largest medical school in the country, with the Bloomington campus being the second largest. It hosts over 100 medical students, two PhD programs, an undergraduate footprint, and a robust research program. The campus will be a new IUSM graduate medical training site in 2026, with residencies in Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine. The residency will be based at the Bloomington Regional Academic Medical Center, which includes the IU-Bloomington Health Sciences Building and IU Health Bloomington Hospital, a 350+ bed level 3 trauma center and level 2 NICU, with an ED census of approximately 60,000 annually.
IU Health is Indiana's largest health system, and the South Region will serve as the foundation for the EM residency. Training opportunities are available across four hospitals and multiple outpatient sites, offering experiences in both community and academic settings across diverse communities, including Indianapolis, West Lafayette, Muncie, and Ft. Wayne. All physicians in the IU Health Medical Group hold faculty positions with IUSM, emphasizing medical education's central role in the health system.
The IU-Bloomington community offers collaborative research opportunities, vibrant campus life with world-class music, business, and public affairs programs, and outdoor activities in natural settings. The region is within two hours of three international airports with nonstop flights to destinations worldwide, making it accessible for travel and collaboration.
IUSM is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and community engagement contribute to a welcoming and robust learning environment for all. Join us in our mission to improve health equity and well-being across Indiana.
