Job Description

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMM) is an international leader in medical and scientific training, biomedical research, and patient care. It is the medical school for the Mount Sinai Health System, which includes seven hospital campuses, and has more than 5,000 faculty and nearly 2,000 students, residents and fellows.

The Associate Researcher is an entry laboratory research position, responsible for conduct of routine and assisting in routine and standardized experiments using techniques specific to the assigned research project under the supervision of the Principal Investigator or a senior researcher. This individual typically conducts laboratory research and the position may include lab and clerical support. S/he analyzes and assists in interpreting research outcomes.

The Labanieh Lab is seeking motivated Associate Researchers to support the development of novel biotechnology platforms for: i) the precise in vivo delivery of genetic cargo and ii) regulation of immune cell function. These projects are focused on making safer and more effective cell therapies (e.g., CAR-T) and gene therapies for cancer and beyond. We are an interdisciplinary lab spanning the fields of synthetic biology, immune cell engineering, protein engineering, and immunology, with an eye towards clinical translation. Lab members will gain extensive experience in cutting-edge methodologies in T cell engineering, gene editing, viral vector engineering, single-cell omics, and in vivo gene delivery. This is a unique opportunity for passionate scientists to develop next-generation cell and gene therapies that overcome pressing clinical challenges with the potential to provide curative therapies for patients suffering from cancer and other debilitating diseases. We aim to provide a supportive lab environment that fosters research excellence, integrity, and positivity. The Principal Investigator will work closely with lab members to help them reach their full potential and make sure they are on track to achieve their career goals.

Prior experience in cell engineering, synthetic biology, T cell biology, or protein engineering is highly desirable but not required. We encourage applications from individuals with a strong foundation in related fields who are eager to learn and contribute to our research program.

Technical Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Design/perform experiments
  • Generate and test novel synthetic constructs to control immune cell functions
  • Analyze, visualize, and interpret data
  • Document and maintain raw data, analyzed data, constructs, and protocols in an organized manner and share them with others when needed
  • Meet with PI regularly for project and career guidance
  • Assist in maintaining lab functions
  • Perform mammalian cell culture, viral transduction, and molecular cloning
  • Apply methods in protein biochemistry
  • Perform confocal microscopy
  • Assess functionality of immune cells (cell cytotoxicity assays, proliferation assays, ELISA, etc.)
  • Perform mouse experiments to assess safety/efficacy of bioengineering constructs, or to uncover biological mechanisms
  • Analyze immune cells by flow cytometry, RNA-seq, and ATAC-seq
  • Collaborate with research team members
  • Communicate effectively and meet deadlines
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and procedures

The Labanieh Lab is affiliated with the Department of Immunology and Immunotherapy, the Icahn Genomics Institute (IGI), and the Precision Immunology Institute (PrIISM). We are part of a collaborative community of bold thinkers with world renowned expertise in basic sciences and cutting-edge clinical care. The department is supported by state-of-the-art technology cores. We are located in the Icahn Building in the Upper East Side in Manhattan, one block from Central Park.

  • Bachelors degree in science or related field preferred, or combination of relevant research experience and education
  • 0-2 years of research/laboratory experience

Responsibilities

  • Conducts routine and standardized experiments using appropriate research techniques specific to subject matter of the research project.
  • Analyzes and assists in interpreting laboratory results of moderate complexity.
  • Performs assays to support research studies.
  • Maintains laboratory environment and assists in the upkeep of appropriate inventory; may include ordering of supplies.
  • Logs and tests samples; prepares and submits laboratory materials and specimens for shipment.
  • Assists in the collection, analysis and review of experimental data for publication and presentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation Statement

Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $16.5 - $34.1212 Hourly. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
