Definition of Classification:

The University of Redlands invites applications for a tenure-track Associate Professor who will serve as Chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. Position starts August 2027. Seeking a theatre generalist with expertise in directing and costume design. Additional areas of interest include Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre, Theatre History, Chicano/Latine Theatre, Community based Theatre, Social Justice, Diversity in U.S. Theatre, and Devised Theatre. Responsibilities will include teaching the equivalent of three courses per semester, directing and designing productions and teaching courses that can be cross listed with Race and Ethnic Studies, Gender and Women’s Studies, and/or Studio Art.

The Department of Theatre and Dance offers a BA in Theatre and Theatre Business as well as minors in Theatre, Musical Theatre, and Dance. Production and collegiality are central to the department’s approach to theatre education. As part of the School of Performing Arts the department works closely with the Conservatory of Music and produces 4-5 productions a year from large scale operas and musicians to smaller student driven projects. Performance spaces include a 334-seat proscenium stage, a 125-capacity black box theatre, and an intimate 50 seat space. As department chair, this position will be responsible for academic and administrative oversight, season planning in consultation with the Director of Production, marketing for productions, outreach to the community, and recruitment. The successful candidate will maintain a professional profile and participate in service to the university and the field. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Working Conditions: Standard office setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours as well as the ability to travel, as required.

Physical Demands: Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.
