The mission of the Department of Corrections is to be a public safety resource for Arkansas families by providing professional management solutions and evidence-based rehabilitative initiatives for offenders.

All DOC positions are designated as Safety Sensitive Positions and are subject to random drug testing pursuant to the Secretarial Directive governing Personnel Drug Testing. Medical marijuana usage, as defined in Amendment 93 of the Arkansas Constitution, prohibits Personnel in a Safety-Sensitive Position from the use of medical marijuana even if they are qualifying patient under the amendment and/or hold a registry identification card. Department Personnel are prohibited from the use or possession of a medicinal marijuana card pursuant to this policy and state law.

Summary

The Associate Professional Counselor is responsible for providing personal, social, career/vocational and/or academic counseling and guidance services. This position is governed by state and federal laws and agency/institution policy.

Functions

Conducts personal and group counseling sessions, performs crisis intervention, recommends action based on evaluation and makes referrals to mental health, social, or professional counseling services. Recommends clients for job placement in development programs, gathers client files and records, develops treatment plans for clients, refers clients to mental health, social service, or professional counseling services, determines urgency of client's needs through intake evaluations and discusses cases with staff. Plans, schedules, administers, and scores self-assessment tests, obtains test publications, collects data, and develops reports. Develops informational literature, updates and distributes information, maintains resource library, and mails information to various organizations. Researches professional journals to keep abreast of counseling trends, develops new counseling strategies, makes presentations, conducts workshops, attends conferences, prepares brochures, displays, and public service announcements, and compiles activity reports. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

The formal education equivalent of a bachelor's degree in counseling or related field; plus three years of experience in counseling or related area. Additional requirements determined by the agency for recruiting purposes require review and approval by the Office of Personnel Management. OTHER JOB RELATED EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE MAY BE SUBSTITUTED FOR ALL OR PART OF THESE BASIC REQUIREMENTS, EXCEPT FOR CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS, UPON APPROVAL OF THE QUALIFICATIONS REVIEW COMMITTEE.
