Job summary

A&O Shearman in New York seeks a talented Private Client associate with a focus on trusts and estates to join a collaborative, high-caliber team. You will draft wills, trust documents, and related estate planning materials, and assist in administration, tax planning, and fiduciary matters for high-net-worth clients.

The ideal candidate has a JD from an accredited law school, admission to the New York bar, and prior trusts/estates experience (JD years 2022-2023).

• Conduct legal research and analysis
• Draft client communication

Department purpose and structure

The Private Client group at A&O Shearman advises high-net-worth individuals, families, fiduciaries, and family offices on the full spectrum of wealth planning and preservation matters. Our team provides sophisticated counsel on estate and tax planning, trust creation and administration, charitable giving, succession planning, and cross-border wealth structuring. Working in close collaboration with colleagues across the firm's corporate, tax, and real estate practices, the group delivers integrated, multidisciplinary solutions tailored to each client’s personal and financial objectives. With deep experience navigating complex regulatory environments and evolving tax legislation, our lawyers are trusted advisors who help clients protect and transfer wealth across generations.

Role purpose

A&O Shearman's Private Client group is seeking a talented associate to join its practice who is eager to contribute to a sophisticated and collegial team. The ideal candidate will have a background in trusts and estates work at a large law firm and will be responsible for drafting legal documents and assisting in the delivery of advice to clients across a wide range of estate planning and administration, tax, philanthropic, and fiduciary matters. The candidate should be detail-oriented, proactive, and comfortable managing multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment.

Role and responsibilities

• Draft a broad range of estate planning and related documents such as wills, trust agreements, assignments, advance directives, and promissory notes
• Assist with estate and trust administration matters such as surrogate's court proceedings, accountings, and receipt and release agreements
• Prepare summary memos and estate planning flowcharts
• Conduct legal research and analysis
• Draft client communication

Preferred requirements

• A Juris Doctor (JD) degree (LLM or foreign equivalent) from an accredited law school
• Must be admitted, and in good standing, to the New York bar
• Previous Trust and Estate experience
• JD years 2022-2023

For individuals assigned to or hired for this opportunity in New York, the estimated annualized base salary range for this position is $260,000 - $310,000.

The actual base salary offered will depend on the overall qualifications of the individual applicant for the position and other job-related factors permitted by law.
