Job summary

UF Health Shands Homecare is seeking a Patient Care Technician to assist patients with daily living activities and bedside nursing under RN supervision. The role may involve phlebotomy of venipuncture or dermal puncture as appropriate, and requires completing annual training on Safe Medication Handling for Staff Who Do Not Administer Medications.

Responsibilities include measuring vitals, assisting with hygiene, documenting intake/output, and supporting admissions, discharges, and transfers

Qualifications

• High school diploma required.
• Hands-on patient care experience or 2nd-semester RN student.
• CNA, EMT, or CMA certification required within 1 year of hire.
• Preferred: Current CNA, EMT, or CMA license.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and document vital signs; report abnormal results to the nurse.
• Provide personal care including bathing, dressing, dietary needs and toileting.
• Document intake/output, send urine specimens to the lab, perform phlebotomy, label tubes, and monitor bedside glucose.
• Assist with admission, discharge and transfer and update hospital tracking system.
• Assist nurse/physician with treatments including dressings and soaks.
• Ensure patient safety through preventative measures.
• Obtain and restock supplies and ensure charges to patients.

Shift: Variable

The Patient Care Tech assists patients with healthcare needs, activities of daily living and provides bedside care, including basic nursing procedures, all under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). In this role, the Patient Care Technician may also function as a phlebotomist by performing blood collection by venipuncture or dermal puncture, as appropriate.

Responsibilities

• Obtains and documents vital signs and weight; reports abnormal results to the nurse and documents in the electronic medical record.
• Provides personal care including bathing, dressing, dietary needs, and toileting.
• Documents patient intake/output, sends urine specimens to the lab, performs phlebotomy, collects and labels tubes, and performs bedside glucose monitoring.
• Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients and updates the hospital tracking system.
• Assists the nurse and/or physician with treatment interventions, including sterile and non-sterile soaks and/or dressings.
• Provides for patient safety through preventative measures.
• Obtains and restocks supplies and equipment as needed and ensures supplies are properly charged to the patients.

Completes required annual training and learning modules, including Safe Medication Handling for Staff Who Do Not Administer Medications.
