Position Summary

The Department of Geology at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications for a senior tenure-track position (Associate to Full Professor) with a research focus on Critical Minerals (CM). CM are defined as any minerals, elements, or substances designated by a government as essential to energy technology and at risk of supply chain disruption. This position is part of UGA’s Georgia First Program, which aims to promote sustainable growth in CM, energy generation and storage, environmental stewardship, and geohealth. The successful candidate will be expected to teach in the core undergraduate geology curriculum and at the graduate level in their area of expertise. Candidates whose expertise complements the department’s strengths in geophysics, hydrology, sedimentary geology, geobiology, contaminant transport, geohazards, planetary geology, and structural geology are particularly sought to join this vibrant program.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in the geosciences or a related field and have academic credentials commensurate with the promotion and tenure guidelines at the University of Georgia. These guidelines can be found at https://provost.uga.edu/faculty-affairs/promotion-tenure/.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an Associate Professor, have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, And/or Certification

We encourage applicants with expertise in CM resources, particularly those who use field-based studies, laboratory-based geochemistry (e.g., thermodynamics, kinetics, isotopes), or mineral economics and extraction. Applicants with a proven track record of collaboration with government or industry partners are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will demonstrate successful grantsmanship, a record of publishing in high-profile outlets, and the ability to mentor graduate students.
