Associate Medical Examiner

St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners in St. Augustine, Florida (Northeast, FL) is looking for an Associate Medical Examiner for our District Twenty-Three Medical Examiner’s Office (St. Johns, Flagler, and Putnam counties).

The Associate Medical Examiner is responsible for performing the duties associated with medico-legal investigation of death including performing autopsies or examinations of decedents, collection, preservation, evaluation, investigation, documentation, analysis of physical evidence, and courtroom testimony.

The Associate will be joining a team that consists of a Chief Medical Examiner, 1 – Associate Medical Examiner, a Forensic Operations Manager, 4 – ABMDI certified Forensic Investigators, 3 – Forensic Technicians, and 2 – forensic administrative personnel. In 2024 the office investigated 1033 cases with 527 of those cases accepted into our jurisdiction.

This is a full-time position with a comprehensive benefits package. Salary range is $260,000.00 - $293,231 annually, based on board certifications and experience.

The Associate Medical Examiner’s duties include but are not limited to:

  • Performs autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death. Reviews items related to autopsies such as hospital charts, medical examiner investigator reports, and law enforcement agency reports.
  • Responsible for adhering to the rules and regulations that govern medical examiners in the State of Florida (Florida Statute, Chapter 406 and Florida Administrative Code, 11-G).
  • Investigates unnatural deaths by reviewing scene information and photographs, occasionally responds to scenes, and gathers information and evidence from the body.
  • Produces a written autopsy report in a timely fashion.
  • Serves as an expert witness in depositions, grand jury sessions, trials, and conferences with attorneys.
  • Participates in conferences with family members, law enforcement, attorneys, and other individuals to provide information on investigations and autopsies.
  • Trains personnel such as forensic technicians, investigators, medical residents, interns, law enforcement, and emergency medical staff.
  • Presents lectures for students, officers, and the general community.
  • Reviews cases that were reported but not accepted by the investigative division.
  • Reviews cremation requests.
  • Will serve on a 24-hour call, rotational schedule for consultation to the investigative division to include weekends.

Candidates for the Associate Medical Examiner position are encouraged to apply if they meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Graduation from an approved school of medicine and possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Florida as required by the Florida Department of Professional Regulation.
  • Completion of fellowship training in Forensic Pathology.
  • Must be board certified in anatomic pathology or board eligible by the American Board of Pathology within 2 years of employment. Forensic Pathology board certification by the American Board of Pathology must be obtained within 3 years of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver’s license and any other endorsements necessary to legally operate vehicles used while assigned to this position.
