Job summary

L3Harris Technologies in Huntsville, AL is seeking an Associate, Materials Process Engineer to support the AMF Laboratory's materials testing and process development. You will assist with ASTM/MIL/ISO tests, fabricate panels, conduct wet chemistry with chemists, and help optimize lab setup while ensuring 5S+1 discipline and collaboration across teams.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in or completed a bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Recent graduates (within 12 months) are eligible.

Responsibilities

• Test non-metallic materials using a range of instruments and equipment (balances, universal testing machines, ovens, hotplates, hydraulic presses, thermal testing equipment, SEM).
• Fabricate, cure, and inspect non-metallic materials test panels using ovens, caul plates, hydraulic presses, and autoclaves.
• Assist chemists with general wet chemistry processes.
• Conduct testing according to ASTM/MIL/ISO standards, standard work documents, and custom requests.
• Measure properties, record data, and generate reports per material specifications.
• Assist investigations in production and development programs, suggesting relevant testing and presenting findings.
• Assist in optimizing new laboratory setup.
• Communicate with other teams to facilitate work and enterprise test efforts.
• Maintain laboratory readiness and cleanliness through 5S+1, kitting, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Job Description:

This position will work in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility’s (AMF) Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory and will be responsible for supporting the lab’s functions of conducting tests to support material acceptance testing, material shelf-life extension testing, and inert materials characterization. This position will also aid in laboratory operations such as 5S+1, workflow maximization, and equipment management. This position will report to the Materials and Processes Engineering AMF Laboratory Manager in Huntsville, AL.

Essential Functions:

• Test non-metallic materials using a variety of measurement instruments and equipment such as balances, universal testing machines, ovens, hotplates, hydraulic presses, thermal testing equipment and SEM.
• Fabricate, cure, and inspect non-metallic materials test panels as needed, utilizing equipment such as ovens, caul plates, hydraulic presses, and autoclaves.
• Assist chemists with general wet chemistry processes.
• Conduct testing according to ASTM/MIL/ISO etc standards, standard work documents, and custom work requests.
• Measure specific properties and record the data, performing calculations to generate a report, according to material specification requirements.
• Assist investigations in production and development programs, suggesting specific relevant testing, and carefully presenting the extent of information gained.
• Assist in optimization of new laboratory set up.
• Communicate with members from other teams and departments to facilitate work and assist with enterprise test efforts.
• Maintain laboratory readiness and cleanliness through 5S+1, kitting, and continuous improvement initiatives

Qualifications:

• To be eligible, applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field or have completed their bachelor’s degree within the last 12 months, regardless of age.

Preferred Additional Skills:

• Basic knowledge of polymeric materials
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Software applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
