Job summary

L3Harris Technologies in Huntsville, AL seeks an Engineering Technician for the AMF Materials and Processes Lab. The role focuses on material characterization, failure investigations, and in‑process testing to support the MPE team.

You will work under the AMF Laboratory Manager, mentor junior staff, develop testing methods, and contribute to continuous improvement while ensuring compliance with industry standards.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent; 10+ years technician experience or 2-year degree with 6+ years experience.
• Knowledge of non-metallic materials properties and testing methods.
• Hands-on experience with composite layup and vacuum bagging.

Responsibilities

• Complete assigned projects safely, efficiently, and within deadlines.
• Develop, document, and implement new testing methods and procedures.
• Create best practice documentation for material testing techniques.
• Mentor and train technicians and engineers in the lab.
• Provide feedback on test plans and fabricate non-metallic test layups.
• Conduct testing per ASTM, MIL, ISO standards and internal requests.
• Generate laboratory reports per material specification requirements.
• Maintain 5S+1 organized, clean laboratory operations.

The Missile Solutions Business Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Materials Laboratory Engineer Technician E to join our Huntsville, Alabama facility. This position will work in the Advanced Manufacturing Facility’s (AMF) Materials and Process Engineering (M&PE) Laboratory in Huntsville, AL. The primary responsibility will be to perform and support testing for material characterization, failure investigations, material recertification, in‑process testing, and other support of the M&PE team. This position will report to the Materials and Processes Engineering AMF Laboratory Manager in Huntsville, AL.

Essential Functions:

• Complete assigned projects safely, efficiently, and within required deadlines.
• Develop, document, and implement new testing methods and procedures.
• Create best practice documentation for material testing techniques
• Mentor and train lower‑level technicians and engineers in functional area
• Provide feedback on test plans
• Fabricate non‑metallic material test layups
• Conduct testing in accordance with ASTM, MIL, ISO, standard work documents and non‑standard work requests.
• Evaluate non‑metallic materials using a variety of measurement instruments and laboratory equipment, including balances, universal testing machines, ovens, hot plates, hydraulic presses, autoclaves, and rheometers.
• Generate laboratory reports in accordance with material specification requirements.
• Contribute to laboratory operations and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain laboratory readiness, organization, and cleanliness in accordance with 5S+1 principles.

Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 10 years of prior technician experience or 2 years post‑Secondary/Associates Degree with a minimum of 6 years of prior technican experience.

Preferred Additional Skills:

• Demonstrated knowledge of non‑metallic materials properties.
• Hands‑on experience with advanced mechanical testing of non‑metallic materials.
• Hands‑on experience with composite materials layup and vacuum bagging.
• Experience with any of the following test equipment:
• Instron Universal Testing Frame
• Moving Die Rheometer and Mooney Viscometer
• Hydraulic Press
• Autoclave
• Grinding and Polishing
