Job summary

Modican Horn, LLC seeks an Associate Attorney with approximately 1-3 years of civil litigation and/or insurance defense experience to join our Florida practice.

The candidate will independently manage a caseload, develop case strategy, prepare evaluations and budgets, draft pleadings, conduct depositions, and participate in trials and mediations as needed. A strong writing and research background is essential.

Qualifications

• J.D. from an accredited law school.
• Active member in good standing of The Florida Bar.
• Approx. 1–3 years of experience preferred.
• Experience in depositions and hearings preferred.
• Trial experience is a plus but not required.

Responsibilities

• Independently manage a caseload of insurance defense and civil litigation matters with partner oversight.
• Develop and implement case strategy from assignment through resolution.
• Prepare initial case evaluations, litigation plans, budgets, and status reports.
• Draft answers, defenses, motions, discovery, and other pleadings.
• Conduct and defend depositions of parties, experts, and witnesses.
• Attend and argue motions and court hearings; participate in mediations.
• Assist with expert-witness selection, preparation, and strategy.
• Prepare for trial with motions in limine, exhibits, and jury instructions.
• Participate in jury trials as needed.

Job description

Modican Horn is a Florida-based civil litigation and insurance defense firm representing insurance carriers, insureds, businesses, and corporate clients throughout Central and South Florida. Our practice includes automobile and general liability defense, including bodily injury and UM/UIM litigation, premises liability, first- and third-party insurance matters, business litigation, and other complex civil disputes.

Modican Horn is seeking an Associate Attorney with approximately 1-3 years of civil litigation and/or insurance defense experience to join our growing practice.

Responsibilities:

• Independently manage a caseload of insurance defense and civil litigation matters with partner oversight.
• Develop and implement case strategy from initial assignment through resolution.
• Prepare initial case evaluations, litigation plans, budgets, status reports, and recommendations for insurance carrier and corporate clients.
• Draft answers, affirmative defenses, motions, discovery, dispositive motions, and other pleadings and filings.
• Conduct and defend depositions of parties, fact witnesses, corporate representatives, treating physicians, and experts.
• Attend and argue motions and other matters at court hearings.
• Attend mediations, inspections, examinations, and other case-related proceedings as necessary.
• Assist with expert-witness selection, preparation, and strategy.
• Prepare matters for trial, including motions in limine, witness preparation, exhibits, deposition designations, jury instructions, verdict forms, and other trial materials.
• Participate in jury trials as experience and case needs permit.

Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
• Active member in good standing of The Florida Bar.
• Approximately 1-3 years of experience preferred.
• Prior insurance defense, bodily injury, automobile liability, premises liability, UM/UIM, general liability, first-party property, or related civil litigation experience preferred. (not required)
• Experience conducting depositions and attending hearings strongly preferred.
• Trial experience is a plus but is not required.
• Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
• Ability to independently manage deadlines and competing priorities.
• Excellent judgment and professional communication skills.
