The New Mexico Department of Transportation seeks an Associate Highway Maintenance Worker to help maintain US and New Mexico highways, perform light to medium equipment operations, and support safety on the traveling public.

Ideal candidates have a valid driver's license and a Class B CDL within one year of hire, some experience with fencing and road maintenance, and the ability to pass a demonstrate abilities test with 65% or better; the job is safety sensitive and requires pre-employment drug

Candidate will be required to perform and pass a demonstrative abilities test utilizing light to medium equipment in order to move forward to an interview panel.

Ideal Candidate

Some experience repairing fencing and road maintenance.

Must possess a valid driver's license and a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must acquire a valid Class B CDL within one (1) year of hire. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 65% or better.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow. May include exposure to: Sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants, and infected trash.

Moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; Temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations.

High speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; Falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; Standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances for litter control. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call out for weather (including snow removal), accidents and/or emergencies on short notice; willingness to accept change of geographical assignments; interaction with the public. Frequent statewide travel is required. Must be able to respond to emergency callouts on short notice.
