Job summary

Alertus Technologies in Baltimore seeks an Associate Hardware QA Tester to join our QA team and ensure reliability of hardware and firmware for life-safety systems. You will work with development to execute test plans, document defects, and contribute to product quality.

This office-based role requires daily reporting to HQ in Baltimore and offers opportunities to test prototypes, perform functional and performance testing, and collaborate across engineering and support teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in hardware testing.
• Internship or academic project experience in hardware testing preferred.
• Experience with prototype debugging tools.

Responsibilities

• Execute test plans based upon product requirements.
• Maintain defect list using issue-tracking software.
• Perform functional, UX, and performance testing for software and mobile products.
• Identify gaps in test procedures based on business requirements.
• Isolate, reproduce, and document bugs in pre-production and customer environments.
• Collaborate with engineering to reproduce and resolve issues.
• Assist in building out new test environments and capabilities.

Job Description

Our Quality Assurance (QA) team is on the search for a talented tester to make a meaningful impact on Alertus, its customers, and the mass emergency notification industry. The Associate Hardware QA Tester will work directly with the development team to understand hardware and firmware operation(s) and execute suitable test plans for product reliability. Our ideal candidate has keen attention to detail and the ability to catch errors and deficiencies in a critical life safety system.

This is an office based role and requires reporting to our HQ in Baltimore daily.

A Day in the Life:

• Execute test plans based upon product requirements
• Leverage issue-tracking software to maintain a list of known defects
• Perform functional, user experience, user acceptance, and performance testing for our suite of software and mobile products as assigned
• Identifies gaps in test procedures based on business requirements
• Clearly isolate, reproduce, and document bugs in pre-production and customer environments
• Conduct hands-on testing and troubleshooting, analysis of failure trends and root cause / corrective actions
• Work cross-departmentally to investigate, reproduce, and resolve customer reported issues
• Contribute towards process and product documentation and refinement as necessary
• Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on hardware architecture and implementation
• Perform hands-on testing of prototypes and production units
• Troubleshoot complex hardware and software problems
• Isolate the root cause of defects and work with engineering teams to resolve them
• Assist in building out new test environments and capabilities
• Other duties as assigned

Required Skills & Abilities:

• Excellent problem-solving skills
• Strong attention to detail
• Ability to document testing processes for use in technical manuals and/or product support site
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate clearly with both engineering and non-engineering teams
• Ability to troubleshoot complex hardware and software issues
• Experience with prototype debug tools such as oscilloscope and multimeter, as well as techniques to identify and resolve issues
• Ability to travel on occasion

Desired Skills:

• Scripting/coding experience with Python or PowerShell
• Basic understanding of electrical circuits/schematics
• Strong foundational understanding of IP connected devices

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
• Internship or academic project experience in hardware testing or electronics preferred

$22 - $30.85 an hour

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Alertus’ salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will depend on several factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications.
