Job summary

Eight Eleven Group is hiring an Associate Engineering Designer to support electric generation, transmission, distribution, gas, and telecom projects. You will develop designs, layouts, construction drawings, and BOMs for utility infrastructure, starting with smaller pole work and scaling to larger, complex systems with mentorship.

You will work with Regional Design Managers and a team of Designers in a hands-on training program, using AutoCAD-type tools and GIS mapping, while learning

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Civil Engineering (Engineering career ladder track) or AS in Electrical/Mechanical/Industrial/Civil Engineering, or a 2-year technical/trade school degree.
  • Prior field design experience preferred.
  • Comfortable with AutoCAD-type design software and GIS platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving and self-start mindset.
  • Process-oriented with ability to follow established procedures.
  • Attention to detail and ability to execute technically.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with engineers, designers, and field personnel.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple design assignments across concurrent projects.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs, layouts, construction drawings, and BOMs for utility infrastructure projects.
  • Read and interpret work intent; pull and validate data from mapping systems.
  • Create construction-ready designs for poles, pole-top devices, conduit and wiring using AutoCAD-type software.
  • Interpret and apply engineering standards and memos to design work.
  • Evaluate design processes and support continuous improvement.
  • Support system performance planning including demand and capacity analysis.
  • Adhere to client design standards and configuration control procedures.
  • Ensure design deliverables are accurate, complete, and audit-ready.
  • Coordinate with engineers, project teams, and field personnel to verify design accuracy.

Job description

Pay Range - $28.00 - $37.00/hr (Depending on experience)

We are seeking an Associate Engineering Designer to support electric generation, transmission, distribution, gas, and telecommunications infrastructure projects within a major utility's regional design organization. The Associate Engineering Designer will develop designs, layouts, construction drawings, and bills of material for projects involving the installation, removal, or modification of utility infrastructure. Designers brought on through this program will begin with smaller-scope projects, including pole replacements, pole-top device additions, and conduit and wiring updates, and progress into larger, more complex systems and design work as they build experience.

The Associate Engineering Designer will work closely with Regional Design Managers and a tight-knit team of experienced Designers, with direct mentorship and hands-on training.

Responsibilities
  • Develop designs, layouts, construction drawings, and a bill of material for projects and systems involving the installation, removal, or modification of utility infrastructure
  • Read and interpret work intent, and pull and validate data from the mapping and construction system
  • Develop construction-ready designs for the addition and replacement of poles, pole-top devices, and conduit and wiring, using AutoCAD-type design and GIS mapping software
  • Interpret and apply engineering standards and memos to design work
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of current design processes and support continuous improvement efforts
  • Support system performance planning, including demand analysis (DA) and capacity planning input
  • Apply and adhere to client design standards, drafting conventions, and configuration control procedures
  • Follow established processes and procedures to ensure design deliverables are accurate, complete, and audit-ready
  • Participate on teams and coordinate with engineers, project teams, and field personnel to verify design accuracy and resolve technical discrepancies
  • Support fault location activities and coordinate with utility locate services (USIC) as needed
  • Perform field verification and gather field data to support design development; infrastructure and conditions may vary by city or service area
  • Provide technical design support to field construction crews as needed
  • Maintain awareness of applicable industry codes, standards, and regulatory requirements as they apply to design deliverables
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial, or Civil Engineering (Engineering career ladder track), OR
  • Associate of Science degree in Electrical/Mechanical, Industrial, or Civil Engineering, or a 2-year technical/trade school degree
  • Prior field design experience preferred
  • Comfortable working in AutoCAD-type design software and utility mapping/GIS platforms
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a self-starter mindset
  • Process-oriented, with the ability to follow and apply established procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to execute technical work accurately
  • Effective communication skills; ability to collaborate with engineers, designers, and field personnel
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple design assignments across concurrent projects
  • Fault location experience (USIC) is a plus
  • Utility, power, or industrial infrastructure design experience is a plus
