Job summary

Dominion Energy is seeking an entry or developmental level System Protection Engineer to support design and analysis of protective relay settings for up to 69kV equipment. You will perform engineering calculations, analyze systems, and learn to apply protective principles under supervision.

The role emphasizes collaboration, industry involvement, and exposure to IEC 61850 and modern protection schemes. Bachelor of Science in Engineering is required; graduate candidates are welcome.

Qualifications

  • Electrical or computer engineering background, preferably in electric power systems.
  • Strong time management and ability to plan work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with short circuit modeling software preferred (Aspen ONELINER, PSS CAPE).
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850 is a plus; SAP work management experience a plus.
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (Python, .NET, C#) a plus.

Job Summary

Entry or developmental level position providing engineering support in designated company area, or specific engineering discipline. Performs engineering calculations, analysis, research and design. Under direction of supervisor or work leader, performs routine assignments designed to develop professional engineering work knowledge, gain familiarity with techniques, approaches, practices and the nature of engineering systems, equipment, etc. and to develop the ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out sequence of related engineering tasks. Limited exercise of judgment is required on details of work and in making preliminary selections and adaptations of engineering alternatives.

The System Protection Engineering department ensures power system security and reliability through consistent application of protective relay settings and data communication networks per industry standards and regulatory requirements.

System Protection Engineers develop settings for protective relays that detect and isolate electrical faults on the power system. The primary responsibilities for this role include the design, modeling, and development of protective relay settings for up to 69kV equipment. This includes schemes related to interconnection of distributed energy resources and new technologies such as implementing IEC 61850.

Job Responsibilities
  • Develop and/or review protective relay settings, perform engineering calculations, analysis, and research for Electric Transmission protection schemes inside the substation.
  • Provide advanced technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.
  • Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance ET’s system protection performance.
  • Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

  • Associate Engineer: 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience; (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications)
  • Candidates should have an electrical or computer engineering background, preferably in electric power systems. Other engineering backgrounds may be considered if presented in combination with a strong electric power background.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective working independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to think analytically and apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems.
  • Experience with short circuit modeling software preferred. (e.g., Aspen ONELINER or PSS®CAPE)
  • Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus.
  • Experience with SAP work management systems is a plus.
  • Programming skills for automation of system studies (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
Education Requirements

Required Education: Bachelor of Science in Engineering

Preferred discipline(s): Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Computer Engineering.

Note: Upcoming engineering graduates with a projected graduation date of no later than August 31, 2027, who also meet the engineering criteria will be considered.

Note: Dominion Energy minimum experience and education requirements may exceed stated ANSI standards and candidates must meet the Dominion Energy minimum requirements.

For Nuclear Employees, This ANSI Standard Must Be Met, All Of Which Is Met Or Exceeded In The Engineer Series Job Summaries With The Exception Of The Nuclear Power Experience Requirement Of At Least 1 Year

ANSI/ANS-3.1-2014, Section 4.6.1 Education requirements: Baccalaureate or associate degree in engineering or related science. Minimum experience for the position: Related experience which shall include 2 years; Nuclear power plant experience to include 1 year.

Note: Associate Engineer is documented as a trainee.
