JOB SUMMARY

The Associate Engineer – School Operations & Support assists in maintaining and supporting Houston ISD’s student information system (SIS) processes related to scheduling, attendance, grading, and school setup. This entry-level to mid-level role supports data validation, ticket resolution, and routine SIS operations while gaining hands-on experience with K–12 academic workflows. The Associate Engineer ensures schools receive timely assistance with basic SIS functions and contributes to the district’s academic data accuracy.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Respond to help desk tickets from schools related to scheduling, grade entry, or attendance.

2. Assist with SIS configuration, data validation, and academic calendar setup.

3. Run data queries and reports to support audits, grade rollups, or student records reviews.

4. Participate in rollover activities and grading window support.

5 Document solutions to common SIS questions and contribute to training guides.

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES CONTINUED

6. Support testing of SIS upgrades, patches, and releases.

7. Escalate complex issues to senior staff with clear notes and logs.

8. Collaborate with compliance and academic departments to support calendar and policy changes.

9. Communicate with campus staff in a helpful, customer-friendly manner.

10. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in education, computer science, or a related field preferred. Relevant experience may substitute for formal education.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum of 1–2 years in a K–12 environment supporting student systems or academic operations. Campus or district SIS support experience is a plus.

SKILL AND / OR REQUIRED LICENSING / CERTIFICATION

  • Basic knowledge of SIS platforms and school operations
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn SIS workflows
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and reporting tools
  • Customer service and communication skills
  • Interest in education technology and data accuracy

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

None. Works under the guidance of senior engineers or the Director. May assist on assigned projects or tasks.

WORK COMPLEXITY / INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT

Handles routine SIS support tasks. Escalates complex or sensitive issues. Exercises good judgment in documenting and communicating with end users.

BUDGET AUTHORITY

None.

PROBLEM SOLVING

Solves basic SIS problems and assists in troubleshooting routine data or system issues.

IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Supports school data accuracy and service delivery. Errors may lead to delayed campus reporting or minor SIS confusion but are usually caught through review processes

COMMUNICATION / INTERACTIONS

Interacts with campus support teams and technical colleagues. Participates in internal team meetings and support huddles.

CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Serves as a helpful and approachable support contact for campus staff needing assistance with SIS tasks.

WORKING / ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Office work environment. May require extended hours during integration launches, SIS transitions, or academic year rollovers, hybrid setting available.
