Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. is seeking a Substation Field Associate Engineer in New York, NY. The role focuses on basic to moderate engineering design, field investigations, and report preparation for substation equipment.

You will support commissioning, operation, and maintenance activities across HV/MV assets. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 2 years of experience, including preferred electrical engineering expertise and knowledge of industry

  • Electrical engineering background preferred with focus on substation equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical guidance during commissioning, construction and maintenance of substation equipment.
  • Offer field support and perform root cause analysis of equipment failures.
  • Prepare test procedures and participate in design and scoping activities.
  • Support 24-hour emergency response for system events several times a year.

Job Description

The Substation Field Associate Engineer performs assignments of basic and moderate complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, and planning. They also conduct field investigations and prepare associated reports, specifications, standards, and test memoranda within the field or fields of responsibility.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Responsible for providing technical guidance and support during commissioning, construction and maintenance of major substation electrical equipment (HV and MV circuit breakers, power transformers, MV switchgear, capacitor banks, gas-insulated substations (GIS), instrument transformers, dc systems, test sets, etc.).
  • Responsible for providing field support to substation operations when system and equipment problems occur and performs root cause analysis and investigation of equipment failures.
  • Work independently, initiate areas of investigation, and drive projects/programs independently to achieve results.
  • Interface with equipment manufacturers, industry standards and R&D organizations.
  • Assist in preparation of operating, maintenance, and test procedures.
  • Participate in preparation of scoping documents, concept reviews, design field walks.
  • Provide input for the development and update of equipment health indices and recommends planned equipment replacements
  • Conduct and participate in field evaluation/analysis of field equipment or system maloperations, prepare failure analysis reports and other analyses as may be required.
  • Prepare test procedures for equipment commissioning or post repair restoration.
  • As part of the Engineering Duty Roster, you will provide 24-hour support, including reviewing and approving test results and responding to emergent issues, for a week approximately 4-6 times annually.
Qualifications

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant work experience, including 1 year of engineering experience
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 2 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
  • Knowledge in basic engineering design and principles is required.
  • Possess a working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with substation equipment, required.
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in electrical or power systems.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies
  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold
  • Perform extended driving through heavy traffic and severe off-road conditions
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs
  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
