Job summary

Joe Hill Consulting Engineers in San Francisco, California seeks an Associate Engineer to perform challenging professional work, supervise staff, and may act as resident or project engineer. The role may assist in bid proposals and management duties.

We look for a PE or active pursuit of the PE, ABET degree, and five years of relevant experience in water/wastewater projects, plus field experience and willingness to travel. The work spans office, field, and site environments with flexible hours.

Responsibilities

  • Monitors and inspects the work of contractors for compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules.
  • Prepares project documentation including daily reports, force accounts, materials testing, and other construction records.
  • Participates in and/or conducts planning, preconstruction coordination, progress, scheduling, and field staff meetings.
  • Reviews plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, change orders, constructability reviews, and contract closeout records.
  • Assists in detecting and resolving disputes and/or problems and responds to complaints from the public.
  • Verifies and prepares quantity and progress estimates for progress payments.
  • Maintains records of unit price quantities, labor, equipment, and progress for change order work.
  • Makes field measurements and maintains as‑built drawings records.
  • Reports safety hazards and defective work to the contractor for correction.
  • Drives a vehicle to inspection sites.

About the Role

JHCE is seeking to hire a full-time associate-level engineer. Under general direction, the associate engineer performs difficult professional work that requires judgment, supervises the work of related staff, and may act as resident engineer or project engineer. The associate may provide assistance in the development of bid proposals and various management duties.

Desired Qualifications
  • B.S. in civil or mechanical engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in civil or mechanical disciplines. JHCE may consider a candidate with EIT who is actively pursuing their PE and demonstrates excellence in associate-level duties.
  • Five (5) years of verifiable professional-level experience relevant to the area of expertise; a master’s degree may substitute for one year of work experience.
  • Ability to travel by driven automobile.
  • Adaptability to changing working conditions, including prolonged standing and sitting, and frequent work in industrial facilities, construction sites, and other natural environments.
  • Capability to walk up to 2 miles and lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
Role Responsibilities and Compensation

Actual offered pay within the range listed below is dependent on the nature and amount of experience, ability to perform responsibilities, and possession of relevant licenses or certifications.

  • Maintains records of unit price quantities, labor, equipment, and progress for change order work.
  • Reviews and approves change orders for implementation.
  • Makes field measurements and maintains as‑built drawings records.
  • Conducts and/or witnesses testing of contract material, equipment, and installations.
  • Reports safety hazards and defective work to the contractor for correction.
  • Drives a vehicle to inspection sites.
  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
