Job summary

Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is seeking an Associate Engineer at Gene Camp (Parker Dam, CA). You will manage multiple capital and O&M projects, ensuring quality and technical integrity.

Responsibilities include leading proposals, planning studies, securing board funding, and monitoring scope, schedules, and CIP updates. You will collaborate with C&D, IOPSS, Safety & Protection, WRM, IT, and more, using Primavera and MS Project to deliver technical reports and project

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree with two years of relevant experience (Assistant Engineer II level).
  • Experience assisting in capital projects management and supporting multidiscipline project teams. This includes preparing technical reports and formal correspondence, and contributing to design, construction, or project management.

  • Obtain project funding and authorizations through Board processes.
  • Monitor and control project scope, progress, schedules, and budgets for successful delivery.

  • Coordinate environmental assessments and maintain documentation.
  • Use Microsoft Project, Office apps, and CIP system to track and report metrics.
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support and liaison between ES and Desert Region.

Job Summary

As an Associate Engineer on the Colorado River Aqueduct PM Team, you will manage multiple capital and O&M projects, ensuring all engineering work meets Metropolitan’s standards for quality, efficiency, and technical integrity. Your day-to-day responsibilities include leading project proposals, conducting planning and scoping studies, securing board funding authorization, and monitoring scope, schedules, budgets, and CIP updates. You will also coordinate environmental assessments and cross-functional efforts with C&D, IOPSS, Safety & Protection, Treatment & Water Quality, IT, and Water Resources Management, utilizing Primavera, Microsoft Project, and standard Metropolitan software to execute project evaluations and deliver technical reports.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with Capital Projects: Assist project teams in the day-to-day management of all Capital infrastructure project activities from planning and scoping studies to final completion.
  • Project Funding & Authorizations: Obtain the project funding and authorizations through the Board letter/Board process, .
  • Manage Project Delivery: Closely monitor and control project scope, progress, schedules, and budgets to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner across diverse internal teams—including Conveyance & Distribution (C&D), Integrated Operations Support Services (IOPSS), Safety, Security & Protection, Treatment & Water Quality, Information Technology (IT), and Water Resources Management (WRM)—to align project goals and operational needs.
  • Environmental & Compliance Documentation: Identify and coordinate environmental assessments, review environmental reports, and maintain documentation.
  • Utilize Project Management Systems: Utilize Microsoft Project, Office applications, and the Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) system to track, update, and report on project metrics
  • Liaison Function: Provides day-to-day engineering support for on-site Conveyance & Distribution staff and perform general liaison functions between Engineering Services (ES) and Conveyance & Distribution Group (Desert Region).

This job announcement has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work being performed by employees in this classification / job.

Schedule:

44/36 - Monday through Thursday 9-hour workdays; working Friday 8-hour workday; every other Friday off OR 4/10. Start times are no earlier than 6 am and end times are no later than 6 pm.

Hybrid:

Metropolitan’s current practice in this position is a hybrid work schedule. This typically includes two days a week in person and the other days remote. This is subject to change dependent on organizational needs. In addition, a telework policy is scheduled for negotiations and once completed and implemented, will provide final direction on the hybrid schedule.

Incentive Pay Program:

The Incentive Pay program will be setup to provide a Desert Branch Assignment Premium to qualifying employees as follows:

  • 5% for all employees assigned to Gene Camp facility
Housing:

This position is eligible to rent Metropolitan Water District housing.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and four years of relevant experience, of which two years must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level; OR a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field and two years of relevant experience which must have been at the Assistant Engineer II level.

Relevant Experience is defined as:

experience assisting in capital projects management and supporting multidiscipline project teams. This includes preparing technical reports and formal correspondence, as well as contributing to the design, construction, or project management with facility upgrades, repairs, and rehabilitations.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

Employees in this position may be required to obtain and maintain the following certifications, licensing and registrations:

Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent (required at time of application) that allows you to drive during your employment.
