Job summary

Wunderlich-Malec Engineering, Inc. seeks an early-career Electrical Engineer focused on Power to assist in the design, analysis, implementation, commissioning, and protection & control of power systems for industrial facilities, commercial projects, and T&D infrastructure.

Under the guidance of a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will perform studies, develop diagrams, relay programming, and participate in site work, with travel up to 25%.

Qualifications

  • 0–2 years of hands-on electrical engineering experience in power systems.
  • Knowledge of the configuration and programming of digital relays, electronic relays, VFDs, UPSs, transfer switches, generators, transformers.
  • Experience with power systems modeling software such as SKM Powertools, ETAP, EasyPower.

Responsibilities

  • Support project execution under senior engineer direction, including site travel.
  • Design, develop, and implement power system solutions for industrial, commercial, and T&D infrastructure.
  • Develop one-line and loop diagrams, control panel designs, and review equipment drawings.
  • Perform power system studies and set up relay protection and control settings.
  • Travel up to 25% to client sites.

Job description

This early-career Electrical Engineering - Power role supports the design, analysis, implementation, commissioning, and protection & control of power systems for industrial facilities, commercial projects, and generation, transmission, and distribution (T&D) infrastructure. Work is performed under the guidance of a Senior Electrical Engineer.

Project Management Responsibilities

Support project execution under senior engineer direction. Responsibilities include travel to and work at remote sites (domestic and international travel required).

Engineering Responsibilities

Perform engineering design, development, and implementation of power system solutions, including software, hardware, and system integration, under the guidance of a senior engineer. Key activities include:

  • Selecting, specifying, designing, and applying power protection and distribution systems for industrial, commercial, and T&D infrastructure; analyzing existing systems for upgrade and modernization projects
  • Developing one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, loop diagrams, and control panel designs; reviewing and approving manufacturer equipment drawings
  • Performing power system studies and calculations; developing relay protection and control settings using industry-standard software
  • Applying IEEE, NFPA, UL, and other applicable power industry standards.
  • Supporting relay testing and commissioning of multi-function digital and electro-mechanical relays
  • Designing low- and medium-voltage distribution systems
  • Developing detailed relay programs based on customer requirements, calculated setpoints, and existing protection schemes
  • Supporting control enclosure design and manufacturing, including station service, lighting, cable tray, AC/DC load centers, battery sizing, and related facility systems; preparing associated drawings
  • Assisting with quality and project plans, process control sequences, standard practices, scope of supply, RFIs, customer correspondence, and code compliance reviews
  • Preparing project documentation, including status reports, percent-complete estimates, project manuals, network file organization, meeting minutes, purchase orders, equipment specifications, and price quotes
  • Programming protection relays, power meters, and related equipment
  • Using AutoCAD and other design tools for hardware and system solutions
  • Ability to travel up to 10% - 25% to client sites
Education

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) preferred. Equivalent degree and/or relevant experience may be considered.

Experience
  • 0–2 years of hands-on electrical engineering experience in power systems (industrial, commercial, or utility/T&D preferred)
  • Skills – Some knowledge of the configuration and programming of digital relays, electronic relays, VFDs, UPSs, transfer switches, generators, transformers
  • Software Tools – Understand the concept of using power systems modeling software such as SKM Powertools, ETAP, EasyPower, etc.
Physical Demands of Position

Seeing, color perception, hearing, clear speech, dexterity in hands, driving, lifting, climbing, ability to travel distances, ability to mount and dismount equipment, as well as pushing and pulling.

Working Environment

Standard office environment, on-site office environment, diverse industrial, power generating plants, switchyards, indoor & outdoor power utility environments, frequent PC and specialty equipment usage, fax machines, copy machines, phones, trailer environment with constant people interactions.

The expected salary range is $70,000 to $105,000 base per year depending on qualifications plus a discretionary bonus and employee stock program.
