Job description

Position Description

The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, at the University of Washington, invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE) faculty position at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Professor of Clinical Practice, with an anticipated start date of March 2027. Specific rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications as generally described in UW’s Faculty Code Section 24-34. We seek applicants who demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service in a diverse and inclusive academic community.

We are seeking an Associate Division Head for Clinical Affairs for the Division, who will oversee clinical practice across the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) Montlake and Northwest campuses, Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch), and VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS).

Reporting to the Division Head and the Department of Medicine Executive Clinical Leadership Team, the Associate Division Head for Clinical Affairs will provide strategic clinical leadership and oversight across the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. The role will ensure high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care across inpatient, intensive care, ambulatory, pulmonary function testing, sleep, and procedural settings and across all divisional practice sites. Responsibilities include establishing clinical standards and quality benchmarks; monitoring clinical quality, safety, access, utilization, patient experience, and faculty performance; addressing clinical performance, professionalism, and medical staff matters in partnership with appropriate departmental and health system leaders; and overseeing credentialing processes. The Associate Division Head will also foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, collaboration, inclusion and wellness while supporting faculty onboarding, mentorship, development, and promotion readiness.

The Associate Division Head will partner closely with the Division Head, Division Administrator, and clinical and operational leaders to develop and implement the Division’s clinical strategy in alignment with Department of Medicine and Health System priorities. This includes leading strategic clinical growth, new program and service-line development, care model redesign, workflow and operational improvement, and initiatives to enhance access, capacity, and care coordination. The role will lead divisional clinical workforce planning and participate in recruitment, selection, and allocation of clinical faculty, while ensuring appropriate integration of clinical activities with the Division’s research, education, and training missions. The Associate Division Head will collaborate across inpatient, ambulatory, procedural, and service-line leadership to translate clinical strategy into effective, sustainable practice and advance innovation, quality improvement and excellence in patient care.

The position will include clinical bedside teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. Clinical work will be aligned with the clinical interests and focus of the candidate in the practice areas of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

The initial appointment period will be three years, at a minimum, with eligibility for renewal thereafter. Faculty on the Clinical Practice track hold multi-year appointments that align with a 12-month service period (July 1–June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. Clinical Practice track appointments are not eligible for tenure.
