Job summary

Talascend is seeking an Associate Distribution Engineer in Durham, NC, for a contract-to-hire opportunity. The role involves supporting electric utility design projects, performing field and office work, and gaining experience in GIS design, power calculations, and industry standards.

Responsibilities include designing distribution systems, coordinating with utilities, permitting, and providing on-site support during construction. Travel may be required; strong communication skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
• Ability to use a personal vehicle for travel; willingness to perform fieldwork.
• Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work outdoors on occasion.

Responsibilities

• Develop design and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems from 4kV through 138kV.
• Coordinate conflicting utilities and field engineering design requirements in dense urban environments.
• Support the development of work permits, easements, and ROW applications.
• Design mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network systems, and distribution protection.
• Perform engineering calculations such as pole loading and conductor sag analysis.
• Develop permitting documents for authorities having jurisdiction.
• Provide engineering support during construction and conduct post-construction reviews.
• Conduct root cause analysis of outages and propose mitigation strategies.

Overview

The role involves supporting electric utility design engineering projects, ensuring high-quality work, and working both in the field and office environments. Candidates will gain experience in various areas including GIS design, power calculations, and compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Develop design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems from 4kV through 138kV
• Coordinate conflicting utilities and field engineering design requirements in dense urban environments
• Support the development of work permits, easements, and ROW applications
• Design mainline vault medium voltage switchgear, network systems, and distribution system protection
• Perform engineering calculations such as structural analysis for pole loading and conductor sags
• Develop permitting documents for various authorities having jurisdiction
• Provide engineering support during construction and conduct post-construction reviews
• Conduct root cause analysis of outages and propose mitigation strategies

Qualifications

• Completed Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or Industrial) from an ABET-accredited institution

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with distribution design tools such as BOUD, Pole Foreman, SOCKET, Spida-Calc, or similar
• Experience using CAD tools, MicroStation and/or GIS
• Knowledge of NESC and design standards
• Professional attributes such as a collaborative attitude, positive demeanor, and professional appearance
