Job description

Ulteig is excited to announce that we are seeking qualified candidates for an Associate Director position in our Renewables, Substation Department. The Associate Director will focus on leading technical engineering managers and teams consisting of professionals from multiple disciplines (Electrical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineers, Designers and Technicians) while also supporting projects as a leader and business development initiatives that drive revenue growth for the Renewables Market.

In this role, you will lead technical managers and teams of engineers, designers, and technicians supporting utility-scale solar, wind, and battery energy storage projects. You will partner across project delivery, business development, and operations to build team capability, support client success, and position Ulteig for continued growth. Ulteig is employee-owned, flexible in how we work, and focused on solving infrastructure challenges that matter.

What You'll Do

In this role, you will balance project leadership, people leadership, and business development influence. Most of your time will be focused on leading managers and teams, strengthening department capability, supporting strong project execution, and partnering with others to grow Ulteig's Renewables business.

Project Responsibilities - 10%
  • Manages and leads all engineering activities during the proposal, design, quality control, and construction stages of projects that are assigned. May consist of project sponsor roles, PTL roles or advisor roles dependent on project
  • Provides management and leadership for subconsultants
  • Provides project oversight, including managing scope according to contracts, managing change, and maintaining project schedules.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of several disciplines on a project of significant scope or a combination of large projects.
  • Maintains high levels of quality to meet internal and external client requirements in alignment with company expectations.
Management Responsibilities - 50%
  • Maintains and grows positive team culture.
  • Provides strategic direction, leadership and technical services oversight for employees on achieving individual, team, department, and organizational performance goals.
  • Oversees and approves team budgets for financial responsibility and drives accountability. Includes but is not limited to revenue, profitability, and indirect expenses (training expenses, reward and recognition expenses, team event costs, etc.).
  • Coaches, trains and develops management staff for growth and development opportunities. Responsible for regular management meetings, one-on-one meetings, career development discussions, talent assessment succession planning, quarterly reviews, individual promotions, team retention, and team engagement.
  • Regularly evaluates capacity and skillsets to direct growth in workforce planning, supports strong cross team and cross office resourcing collaboration, performs individual performance reviews, evaluates individual annual merit and bonus decisions, and provides training and professional development for team members.
  • Supports company-wide hiring for successful growth which includes; regular evaluation of candidate resumes, technical phone screens, collaboration with HR partners, and regular in person interviews and debrief assessments.
  • Leads the development and implementation of departmental continuous improvement and strategic initiatives to drive efficiency, innovation, and long-term success. Including analyzing current processes, identifying areas for enhancement, and implementing actionable strategies that align with organizational goals.
Business Development Responsibilities - 40%
  • Partner with Business Development and leaders across the organization to support territory sales plan execution, expand services with existing and prospective clients, promote revenue growth, and maintain disciplined cost awareness.
  • Help shape proposal strategy and contracting efforts by coordinating resources, reviewing proposals, and partnering with the Proposal Development Team and Project Management group on contracts, work orders, MSAs, and NDAs.
  • Build and sustain trusted client relationships that support strong delivery, repeat work, and long-term growth in the Renewables market.
  • Represent the Renewables Civil Department in client and market conversations where technical leadership, delivery confidence, and team capability are important to winning and growing work.
What We Expect from You
Required qualifications
  • Prior management experience is required, with demonstrated ability to lead managers, develop people, and build accountable teams.
  • Prior renewable design experience is required.
  • Strong business acumen and industry knowledge.
  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Authorization to work permanently in the United States is required.
Preferred qualifications and leadership strengths
  • PE Registration preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering field from an ABET-accredited program is preferred. Equivalent experience may also be considered.
  • 15+ years of experience in consulting engineering or a related infrastructure-focused environment is preferred.
  • Experience supporting utility scale renewable energy projects is strongly preferred.
  • Brings sound judgment, initiative, and a collaborative leadership style, with the ability to remain steady and effective in complex or high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to employee engagement, manager development, talent growth, and the success of others.
  • Builds effective working relationships with employees, managers, clients, partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrates initiative, responsiveness, and the ability to manage multiple priorities while setting clear expectations with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement and growth while exercising sound judgment around risk, capacity, and organizational impact.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications is expected. Additional software experience may be required or preferred depending on specialty area.

Additional Opportunity Details

Target Base Compensation Range for this role is $160,200 - $216,600
