REMOTE

The Associate Director (AD) is a key member of the Scientific Communications team, responsible for ensuring high-quality scientific outputs and managing resources effectively. The AD will collaborate with the Director of Scientific Communications to develop and execute scientific communication strategies, oversee publication planning, and manage scientific messaging for marketed and clinical products.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Developing and executing scientific communication plans for BioMarin's skeletal condition programs in the US.
  2. Contributing to scientific messaging development and maintaining the Scientific Communication Platform.
  3. Ensuring cross-functional alignment of messaging and strategies to address gaps.
  4. Maintaining expert knowledge of product- and disease-specific literature, conducting literature and gap analyses.
  5. Organizing expert meetings for publication strategy development, managing vendors, and presenting as needed.
  6. Supporting scientific congress activities, including content development for symposia.
  7. Facilitating external development of treatment and management guidelines.

Publication Content Creation

  1. Researching, drafting, and editing scientific and medical manuscripts, abstracts, posters, and presentations.
  2. Managing external medical writers and graphic designers as needed.
  3. Ensuring all scientific communications meet high standards of integrity and adhere to authorship and publication guidelines (ICMJE, GPP 2022).
  4. Maintaining and reconciling activities within the publication development database.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Responding to internal and external inquiries about scientific communications.
  2. Participating in cross-functional team meetings to share planning status and issues.
  3. Supporting management of the Scientific Communications budget.

Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex scientific data.
  • Advanced understanding of statistical and clinical research concepts.
  • Knowledge of biotech/pharmaceutical clinical and regulatory processes.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.

The AD may manage direct reports.

Education

  • MS or higher in life or health sciences.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in scientific communications, publication planning, or medical writing within pharma or medical writing agencies.
  • Management experience of at least 2 years is preferred.
