Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Director of Learning and Public Engagement, the Associate Director of School Programs manages the Unpacking the Past program, an initiative with Philadelphia Title 1 schools for middle school students at the Penn Museum. This position writes curriculum, designs program activities, creates evaluative tools, manages program budgets and supports grant reporting. This role supervises two full-time and two part-time educators to deliver a multi-touch point program. They work closely with the Associate Director of Interpretation to create a well-trained K12 teaching team. This role supervises staff in delivering teacher, teen OST and teen intern programs.

Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the Unpacking the Past program including writing curriculum, designing program activities, creating evaluative tools, managing program budget, reporting on program attendance and outcomes for 6,000 6-7th grade students in Philadelphia Title 1 Schools every year.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate four team members to meet program goals and produce measurable outcomes including two Senior Museum Educators, and two Part-Time educators to reach 6,000 students every year.
  • Track and monitor all program expenses, separating out those that need to be charged to the grant from those that will go to a gift account, and working with both the grants manager and the business office, as well as visitor services and security who will be charging salaries to the program budget. Provide all reporting information to the Development Office, for use in both grant/gift reporting as well as the annual report and other communications pieces.
  • Work closely with program staff to schedule all museum and school visits, including staffing the Museum educators to teach each group, and meeting with teachers and school personnel to book pre-visit in class lessons, field trips, and onsite workshops, and to arrange bus transportation.
  • Work closely with Associate Director of Interpretation to coordinate K12 visit logistics, ensure K12 team is trained, and align teaching strategies to create collaborative K12 teaching team that works well together.
  • Supervise Senior Museum Educators in coordinating high school internship program for Penn Museum including reviewing student applications, creating job descriptions, managing timecards, and coordinating internship enrichment activities with Academic Engagement and other museum departments. Be Penn Museum Liaison with Bloomberg Arts Initiative and point of contact for local high school intern programs.
  • Design and implement OST enrichment program to encourage school students from Philadelphia’s Title 1 Schools to learn about careers in conservation, archaeology, anthropology, science, and/or museums, and explore University resources.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree and 3 to 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Candidates should have demonstrated teaching experience working with school children as well as project management experience. Master's degree preferred.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, and in alignment with salary ranges based on external market data for the job’s level.
