Job Summary

The Office of Advancement at Oberlin College and Conservatory seeks applications for the position of Associate Director of Regional and Young Alumni Engagement. This is a full-time, continuing, 12-month, Administrative & Professional Staff position reporting to the Director of Reunions and Regional Activities.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director will lead key alumni engagement programs, with a focus on regional activities and young alumni, to strengthen alumni connections with Oberlin College and Conservatory as well as encourage support of Oberlin through volunteerism and philanthropy.

This role is responsible for leading and managing three core areas:

  1. Oberlin’s regional alumni activities program;
  2. Student-to-alumni transition initiatives; and
  3. Specific young alumni and other community-building initiatives.

Additionally, the Associate Director will collaborate with and support alumni engagement efforts led by other members of the Alumni Engagement team.

Essential Job Functions
Regional Activities

Develop, lead, implement, and assess a comprehensive regional alumni engagement strategy. This strategy will support the oversight of established alumni clubs, the identification and development of regional alumni volunteers in key markets, and the implementation of activities to increase volunteer-driven Oberlin alumni regional events. Work will entail recruiting, training, equipping, and retaining volunteers, as well as identifying opportunities where they may grow their volunteer service (in areas such as Admissions and Career Exploration and Development support, among others) and philanthropy. Identify opportunities where affinity-based, admissions supporting, or alumni career supporting goals and activities can be implemented within regional gatherings and programs. Work with Oberlin’s Athletics Department to maximize efficiency in planning and effectiveness in executing regional events.

Student-to-Alumni Transition Programming

Lead Oberlin’s student-to-alumni transition initiatives, working with partners across campus to develop communications and educational opportunities that prepare students to graduate and remain informed, connected, and engaged alumni.

Community Building Initiatives

Serve as the Alumni Engagement team member charged with ensuring that young alumni (roughly defined as graduates of the last decade) are taken into account as volunteer opportunities are identified and promoted, reunion plans are made, regional activities are selected and conducted, communications are created, and purely for fun engagement initiatives are designed. Manage Oberlin’s online Alumni-Owned Business Directory and identify opportunities where this tool can support Oberlin’s Advancement Division goals. Serve as the staff liaison to the Obies Out Front volunteer work group of Oberlin’s Alumni Leadership Council. (Obies Out Front promotes public appearances such as concerts, performances, book-signings, and similar activities conducted by Oberlin alumni around the world.) Work with various campus partners to implement community-building initiatives.

Marginal Job Functions

Staff and support key initiatives of the Office of Alumni Engagement, including Commencement and Milestone Reunion Weekend, Homecoming, All In For Oberlin (annual day of giving), as well as other alumni-focused programs and activities. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; 2-5 years of experience, preferably in alumni engagement, volunteer management, event planning, higher education, or other environment providing equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience managing complex projects from inception through execution. Proven ability to provide top-notch guest and/or stakeholder service that balances guest/stakeholder needs with the College’s priorities. Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work well in a team setting and with all constituencies of the College, with particular attention to sensitive and diplomatic handling of matters. Self-motivation and the ability to balance a multitude of tasks while considering the needs of the entire team. Flexible schedule to permit event and weekend hours. Ability to travel nationally. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desired Qualifications
