Associate Director of Development, Human Medicine / Development Officer II

Position Summary

MSU College of Human Medicine is seeking an Associate Director of Development to enhance philanthropic support for student scholarships, research, faculty positions, and programmatic priorities. The ideal candidate will be an outcomes-driven and proven fundraiser experienced in local, state, and national markets.

The college is a community-integrated medical school with campuses across Michigan, including Detroit, Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Midland, Southeast Michigan, Traverse City, and the Upper Peninsula. Known for excellence in medical education and a focus on health equity, the college aims to conduct collaborative research addressing disease prevention and innovative therapies. The college seeks a major gift officer with a successful record in closing 6- and 7-figure gifts.

Responsibilities
Fundraising
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 75 major donor prospects, focusing on those with capacity of $100,000 or more.
  • Develop and execute strategies for engaging prospects, aiming for 15 personal contacts per month and 2-4 major gift solicitations.
  • Collaborate with university colleagues, faculty, and volunteers to identify and cultivate potential donors.
  • Achieve fundraising goals through active outreach using various communication channels.
Program Management
  • Set and analyze annual fundraising goals and assist with campaigns.
  • Advise faculty and staff on development strategies.
  • Coordinate engagement and stewardship events.
External Communication and Stewardship
  • Prepare proposals, briefings, and talking points for fundraising efforts.
  • Develop and implement a donor communication plan.
  • Ensure positive relations with prospects and donors.
Reporting and Collaboration
  • Report on fundraising progress.
  • Work with university and college teams to maximize support.
Qualifications
  • Four-year degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Business, or related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in fundraising or related areas; proven success in securing major gifts of $100,000+.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in higher education or biomedical research fundraising is preferred.
  • Knowledge of relevant tax laws and fundraising regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel.
