Job description

Clinical Veterinarian

The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) at a prestigious institution is seeking a customer service-oriented individual to join our team as a clinical laboratory animal veterinarian and Assistant Director. Our research programs encompass a broad range of biomedical research activities, focusing on fields such as cardiovascular disease, alcoholism, hematopoietic cancer, behavioral research, aging, and gene therapy. We provide comprehensive care and housing for multiple species, including swine, dogs, rabbits, frogs, and rodents. Our program is accredited by AAALAC International and includes a dedicated team of approximately 90 animal program staff, including seven veterinarians. This is a non-tenure research track faculty position, starting at the assistant scientist level, with potential for advancement to associate scientist based on qualifications.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements for working with animals in biomedical research, including the Animal Welfare Act & Regulations, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, local policies, and other applicable regulations.
  2. Provide veterinary preventive, clinical, diagnostic, technical, and surgical services, focusing on USDA-regulated species, frogs, laboratory mice, and rats. Conduct regular rounds and check-ins.
  3. Perform routine surgeries such as spay/neuter, jugular/carotid catheter implantation, and other procedures for experimental model development.
  4. Advise researchers on grant budget construction for technical and surgical services, organize preparatory meetings, order supplies, and track supplies and labor for billing.
  5. Communicate with internal and external customers regarding animal health, husbandry, environment, and study conduct.
  6. Review vendor health records and animal orders, assist with imports/exports.
  7. Provide consultation on anesthesia, analgesia, surgery, breeding, housing, hazards, model selection, and protocol writing.
  8. Participate in training programs, create and implement training content.
  9. Offer expertise in specialty areas such as GLP, immune-compromised, gnotobiotic, hazards, or ABSL-2/3 areas.
  10. Lead operational teams to prevent issues, identify opportunities, and solve challenges.
  11. Supervise veterinary technical staff and perform HR duties including hiring, mentoring, and performance management.
  12. Assist in writing/updating SOPs and policies.
  13. Serve on committees (e.g., IACUC, IBC), review protocols, and monitor post-approval activities.
  14. Stay updated on issues in laboratory animal medicine and science.
  15. Participate in quality assurance, conduct inspections, perform quality checks, and oversee surgical suite maintenance.
  16. Participate in site visits and audits by external organizations such as AAALAC-International, USDA, etc.
  17. Share emergency on-call duties on a rotating basis.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability to have direct physical contact with and prolonged exposure to laboratory animals.
  • Availability to work full-time and on-site.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an AVMA-accredited program.
  • Current veterinary license in at least one U.S. state, with eligibility to practice.
